SA sees major infrastructure boost in the north as $1.5 billion water project progresses

A $1.5 billion water infrastructure investment completes essential pipework, setting the stage for new housing and an extensive Craigmore Road upgrade to enhance community commutes.

SA has seen significant steps towards boosting housing and infrastructure in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, as the State Government has announced the completion of a crucial phase in its $1.5 billion investment aimed at enhancing water infrastructure in the region. This milestone is part of a pivotal moment in the construction of new homes by completing pipelaying along Curtis Road.

More than 3,500 metres of new trunk water main have been successfully installed under Curtis Road, stretching from Leicester Grove in Andrews Farm to Main North Road in Blakeview. This installation is part of a larger initiative that includes laying a total of 5,200 metres of trunk water mains across Angle Vale to support suburban development.

With the completion of this section, construction crews have shifted their focus towards Craigmore Road. Here, installation extends from Bentley Road to the SA Water storage tank at the intersection of Craigmore and Adams Roads. This effort aims to connect the entirety of the new pipeline network.

The State Government, along with SA Water and the City of Playford, have strategically decided to undertake a comprehensive upgrade of Craigmore Road. This decision upgrades the project from partial remediation to a full road reconstruction. The collaboration ensures that the entire width of Craigmore Road will be revamped, enhancing the road surface and overall quality for daily commuters. Unlike the initial plan, which included repairing only the damaged sections of the road, SA Water will now provide funding to ensure the completion of a full-width road reconstruction. The road upgrade will be executed in stages to minimise disruption to traffic, with the project completion slated for March 2026.

Nick Champion, the Minister for Housing Infrastructure, shared, “Our generational investment in water infrastructure will unlock thousands of new homes for South Australians in the north and beyond. It’s essential that while we’re laying the pipes that will lead to homes being built, we’re also ensuring community infrastructure is improved in line with the growth in the north.

Ella Shaw, Labor Candidate for Elizabeth, said, “This outcome is a huge win for our community – the upgrade to Craigmore Road is going to make commuting in the area quicker, easier and safer. This is another example of the Malinauskas Labor Government delivering an outcome for the north.”

Glenn Docherty, the City of Playford Mayor, added, “This is an excellent example of local and state government working together to deliver infrastructure to support our growing community. With SA Water completing the essential upgrades to the underground services, Council will move forward with the Craigmore Road renewal as a shared and jointly funded project.”

This comprehensive infrastructure project remains on schedule, with major construction anticipated to conclude in early next year. With further investments lined up for 2026, including new trunk sewer mains and pumping stations on Curtis Road west of the Northern Expressway, the region continues to evolve in response to its growing residential demands.
