SA short film wins short of the decade

A South Australian comedy, written by Dave Wade, has won best short film of the decade.

South Australian short film Welcome to Iron Knob (2013) has been awarded Short of The Decade by the AACTA Australian Academy Awards (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Awards.) It was shot entirely in SA and made with support from the Australian Film Corporation and Adelaide Film Festival.

The film, set in rural Australia, is a comedy of errors. After two young boys accidentally shoot a mysterious stranger with one of their father’s guns, the nonchalant townsfolk of Iron Knob band together to cover it up… With as minimal fuss as possible.

The atmosphere is pulled straight from provincial Australia, with recognisable characters aplenty. It provides a charming social snapshot of life in a small town. At the time of writing its current IMBD rating is 7.6/10.

A crowdfunding campaign asked for financial support to help filmmaker Dave Wade – many times nominated, never a winner – to pull together the tools to create an award winning short film.

The winner was announced during a special online event on Saturday 28th November, hosted by actor Sunny S. Walia. Films were voted for online by the Australian public. Sixty eligible films were available to view for free on AACTA’s website.

The project pulled a long list of Australian film heavyweights to get it off the ground, something the team is incredibly proud of.

Writer-Director Dave Wade has a distinct voice in Australian comedy. He’s made a plethora of films, including the acclaimed short Cropped. He’s currently developing his first feature, Digger, with Screen Australia and the South Australian Film Corporation.

Producer Alexandra Blue, whose feature slate includes projects in development with the BFI, Film 4 and Screen Australia, is also well regarded.

A whole host of other talented SA and Australian filmmakers, actors, producers and designers were also involved. It’s a great feat for this 21 minute production.
