The Federal Government has announced it will be committing to turbo-charge SA’s nation-leading Australian Space Park which is to be built at the Adelaide Airport precinct.
The extra $20 million of funding, on top of the already committed $20 million from the State Government will open new opportunities for the Australian Space Park by adding a common user facility to the Park, which will be made available to space companies Australia-wide.
SA is becoming the space state being the home of the Australian Space Agency, Space Discovery Centre and Mission Control. It is now firmly establishing itself as the home of commercial space and space manufacturing.
The $66 million project is expected to create 221 local jobs, as well as more than 1,000 others indirectly.
Premier Steven Marshall today thanked the Federal Government for confirming South Australia as the nation’s space state, saying the future of the South Australian Space Industry has never been stronger. “The space sector is good for business and good for jobs,” Premier Marshall said.
“Not even the sky is the limit when it comes to opening new opportunities for our kids and grandkids in the Space Industry.
“South Australia is unequivocally the Space State – we have already created nearly 1,600 space jobs in the state and today’s announcement is going to see that number take off.
“We are the home of the Space Discovery Centre, Mission Control, the Australian Space Agency, the Australian Space Park and more than 90 space-related companies are already based right here in SA.
“This sector is going gangbusters and it’s going to mean our young South Australians can have a rewarding career in the space sector right here without having to move interstate or overseas.”
The State and Federal funding will supplement industry investment into the Australian Space Park by Fleet Space Technologies, AT Space, Alauda and Q-CTRL.
It will support sovereign space capability development via the establishment of common user facility that will enable the development, integration and test of space hardware.
The common user facility at the Australian Space Park will be designed and equipped with industry needs and challenges front of mind – reducing some of the extreme cost barriers space companies face in developing and manufacturing complex technologies to the highest standards required for delivery to space.
Minister for Trade and Investment Stephen Patterson said the Australian Space Park will strengthen space companies’ competitiveness for commercial contracts and private investment.
“The funding from the Federal Government’s Modern Manufacturing Initiative galvanises the opportunity to construct a common user facility within the Australian Space Park capable of small constellation manufacture and enhanced manufacturing capability,” Minister Patterson said.
“The Australian Space Park will accelerate Australia’s sovereign space manufacturing capability, support the national aim to triple space’s contribution to Gross Domestic Product to $12 billion by 2030, create hundreds of highly skilled jobs of the future in South Australia.”
