SA tops the nation’s most sought-after wines for the cellar in 2024

In a year marked by challenges for the Australian wine industry, South Australian wines have emerged as the top choice for collectors, according to Wine Ark, the nation’s largest wine storage provider.

Wine Ark, which houses over a million bottles across its fifteen facilities, has released its annual report on the most cellared wines of the year, providing a fascinating glimpse into the preferences of Australian wine enthusiasts.

The 2024 report reveals a significant shift towards South Australian wines, with the Barossa Valley leading the pack as the most cellared region, accounting for 23.4% of the wines stored this year. McLaren Vale also secured a spot in the top five, further solidifying South Australia’s dominance in the wine world.

This trend underscores the enduring appeal of South Australian wines, known for their rich history, diverse varieties, and exceptional quality. From the bold Shirazes of the Barossa to the elegant Chardonnays of the Adelaide Hills, South Australian wines continue to captivate palates and cellars across the country.

John Cuff, a spokesperson for Wine Ark, shared his surprise at the growing popularity of age-worthy Chardonnay, noting a significant increase in its collection. “Over the years, we’ve observed a marked increase in the appetite for age-worthy Chardonnay. However, I fully expected a red wine to take the top spot this year. There are over seven Chardonnays in the Top 25 wines added in 2024, including four in the top 10.”

The report also highlighted a strong preference for boutique and family wineries, offering a glimmer of hope in a challenging year for the industry. Cuff remarked, “It’s been a tough year for the wine trade. It’s heartening to see that the vast majority of wines purchased and stored at Wine Ark this year were produced by smaller, family-run wineries.”

Despite the industry’s hurdles, Wine Ark reported a 15% increase in wine storage from 2023 to 2024, suggesting a growing trend among consumers to invest in quality wines for long-term enjoyment.

As we raise a glass to the end of another year, it’s clear that South Australian wines continue to hold a special place in the hearts and cellars of Australian wine lovers. Whether it’s the iconic Penfolds or the much loved Henschke, these wines are a testament to the enduring legacy of South Australian winemaking.
