A list by Citro ranks the top 30 destinations to retire – and South Australia has three total entrants in the list!

Retirement comes with a whole lot of new and exciting decisions. Will you downsize? Will you travel? What’s the plan?

If you’ve recently retired, or if you’re planning to in the near future, perhaps you’ve put some thought into moving. A list compiled by Citro has attracted a bit of attention recently. It ranks the top 30 destinations to retire according to 2024 data – and South Australia has three total entrants in the list!

Topping SA’s best places to retire was western Yorke Peninsula port town, Wallaroo. The town, a two-hour drive northwest of Adelaide, sits at eighth place in the list. It’s median house price was $449,000 and median rent was $410 per week.

Wallaroo is a picturesque seaside town offering an abundant range of activities, and plenty of space to relax, unwind, and enjoy your post-work lifestyle. With scenic bike trails, microbreweries, and popular restaurants, there is plenty to do, see, eat, and drink! With construction on the horizon of a luxury 100 villa resort located idyllically beachside in Wallaroo, the town still has plenty of room for growth.

Despite its competitively affordable dwelling prices, Wallaroo street Stately Way is the most expensive regional street in South Australia. With a breathtaking waterfront location offering pontoon space, magnificent sunsets, and coastal luxury, it’s not hard to see why.

So where is the best place to retire in all of Australia? Well, according to the list, Armidale, in the Northern Tablelands is the top pick. With a neighbourly population of 23,967 and a lush surrounding of autumn greenery, Armidale is picked as the ultimate relaxing small city to retreat to in your post-work life.

The list also ranked two other South Australian locations in its top-30, with Victor Harbor and Mount Barker also making the cut.

The list, compiled by online rewards platform Citro, ranks the top 30 towns for retirement with a mixed analysis of value for money, leisure, and location.
