SA Water backs cycling, paddling and adventure racing at reservoir reserves with new community funding

SA Water has awarded $43,700 to community groups to deliver cycling, paddling and nature-based activities at reservoir reserves across South Australia.

South Australians are being encouraged to lace up, paddle out and explore some of the state’s most scenic reservoir reserves, with SA Water announcing funding support for a new wave of community-led recreation programs.

Five not-for-profit organisations have shared $43,700 through SA Water’s 2025–26 Reservoirs Partnership Program, backing grassroots initiatives designed to help people enjoy, learn about and protect reservoir environments across the state.

The program allows community organisations to apply for up to $10,000 to deliver activities that promote conservation, education and outdoor recreation, while strengthening public connection with SA Water’s reservoir reserves.

SA Water Manager of Environment and Recreation Dr Brooke Swaffer said the program continues to unlock the recreational potential of these unique spaces.

“The Reservoirs Partnership Program creates more chances for South Australians to connect with nature, stay active and explore the environments that make our state special,” Brooke said.

“This year’s program supports a diverse range of activities ranging from paddling and cycling to citizen science and adventure racing. We’re excited to see how these initiatives will inspire families and individuals to enjoy the great outdoors in safe and sustainable ways.”

Among this year’s recipients is Bike SA, which will use the funding to deliver a community cycling event at Happy Valley Reservoir Reserve. CEO Sue Bowman said the Discovery Ride will cater to a broad mix of riders, from beginners and families to more experienced cyclists. “Reservoirs provide a unique space for people to get active, connect with nature, and explore South Australia’s trails in a safe and inclusive way,” shared Sue.

Water-based recreation also features strongly, with Paddle SA launching Paddle Power, a program focused on helping individuals and families paddle safely at Happy Valley Reservoir Reserve. Meanwhile, Adelaide Canoe Club will host a community day at Myponga Reservoir Reserve, combining come-and-try paddling sessions with a community barbecue, educational stations and conservation workshops.

For those seeking a more competitive edge, Murraylands Multisports will deliver a Total Recon Adventure Race series across Happy Valley and Myponga reservoir reserves, blending running, mountain biking and kayaking with navigation challenges.

Education and environmental discovery are also on the agenda, with TAFE SA running a Junior Bio Blitz and Citizen Science Day at South Para Reservoir Reserve. Designed for families with children aged four to eight, the day will include birdwatching, sound recording and hands-on nature workshops exploring ecosystems, insects and plant life.

Events and activities supported through the program will roll out across various dates throughout the year, with details shared by host organisations and promoted through Reservoirs South Australia’s social media channels.
