One of the Barossa Valley’s most striking event backdrops will once again play host to fast-paced polo, fashion and flowing champagne, with Barossa Polo Classic set to return this March long weekend.
Presented by the Adelaide Polo Classic team, the event marks just the second time polo has been staged at Chateau Tanunda, following a COVID-affected debut more than four years ago.
Event director Luke Schapel said the decision to bring the event back to the Barossa came together quickly after securing access to the private polo field on the Château Tanunda estate.
The field sits alongside the chateau with rolling Barossa hills and vineyards on the other side.
“It’s an extraordinary location.”

Barossa Polo will feature two polo matches played in a fast-paced 20/20 style format, with each team contesting three chukkas across approximately 45 minutes of play.
Between matches, spectators will be invited onto the field for the traditional divot stomp, which includes champagne corks hidden among the turf, redeemable for a bottle of champagne.
A fashion on the field competition will also feature, with support from local boutiques and sponsors, adding to the event’s signature blend of sport and style.

Unlike the city-based polo events, the Barossa edition is designed as an all-ages affair. The VIP marquee package featuring three-hours of flowing French champagne, a Stables package and a general admission ticket option. Where people can bring their own food, chairs, blankets and picnic rugs.
Spectators can also expect close interaction with players and horses, with opportunities for photos and to learn more about the sport.
“We make sure that the players, when they’re not playing, get out into the crowd, and bring the horses out,” said Luke.
“There’s a lot of opportunity to get photos with the horses and learn more about the game as well.”
The event will begin at 5pm on Sunday 8th of March and will run through until 11pm, with live entertainment following the matches. Popular DJ duo Opposites Attract will take over as the sun sets across the vines, turning the evening into a relaxed post-polo party.
Free parking is available at Château Tanunda wines for those not drinking but coach transfers will also run from the Lion Hotel in North Adelaide, bookable via the Adelaide Polo Classic website.
Barossa Polo will be held at Château Tanunda on Sunday, March long weekend and this family friendly evening will be the perfect way to get prepared for Adelaide Cup the following day.
