SAJC Racing Set for an Impressive Weekend at Morphettville Racecourse

Head down to Morphettville Racecourse this weekend as we head into the exciting final week of the Racing Season.

Three meetings remain for the Racing Season and both the Premierships, Trainer’s and Jockey’s, hang in the balance.

In the Jockey’s title, Paul Gatt looks safe with a five win break over Clare Lindop. Lindop kept the door slightly ajar with her double last Saturday, whilst Gatt was winless.

Heading into Saturday’s racing, Gatt has seven rides to Lindop’s five, but with horses like Just Discreet and Sidecar, Lindop will be optimistic she can bridge the gap further if the racing gods are smiling upon her.

The trainer’s battle is an absolute thriller with last year’s winner Mark Kavanagh in equal top position with John Thompson. David Jolly is still very much in the equation with only two wins behind the leaders.

Saturday’s meeting will see just the two runners from the Kavanagh and Thompson yards, whilst Jolly will saddle up four, so the numbers are very much in the latter’s favour.

The other racing highlight is the appearance of one of the country’s best hurdlers, Black And Bent, in the opening race, the Leslie Short Hurdle. A six time winner over the obstacles, Black And Bent has been allotted the massive weight of 73.5 kilograms for his return to jumping this year, as he embarks on a program which includes the Kevin Lafferty Hurdle at Warrnambool, and the Grand National Hurdle at Sandown.

Trainer Robert Smerdon said, “It’s a big weight but this has been in our plans for a while and is about what we expected.”

Smerdon is hoping Black And Bent can showcase his talents overseas, and has earmarked rich races in Japan in either December 2011or in the autumn of 2012.

The racing season concludes after further meetings on Thursday 28 July, and Saturday 30 July, 2011 with the final meeting also including the running of the Reliance Petroleum Stakes at Listed level for two and three year olds.
