SALA: Cabinet of Curiosities

Cabinet-0f-Curiousity_Alison-MainA quirky Cabinet of Curiosities will be one of the main highlights of the Saint Ignatius Art Show 2013 with around seventy small and intriguing works of art on display.

James Parker is the Installation Artist who was inspired to create his own Cabinet of Curiosities for the Art Show, a concept with origins dating back to the sixteenth century.

“A Cabinet of Curiosities historically is a collection compiled generally (but not exclusively) by wealthy men and comprises artistic, cultural, architectural, historic and natural artefacts collected on their travels, displayed either in small cabinets or in designated rooms within their homes,” said explains.

“Our Cabinet is an art installation, an environment that is at the same time one work of art and a collection of works, not unlike a coral reef where many parts make up a beautiful interesting, curious whole. We are inviting one and all to come to the cabinet and get their curiosity piqued!”

Many of the show’s 60+ contributing artists eagerly took up the opportunity to add something unique to Mr Parker’s Cabinet. Participating artists were supplied with a small frame and a piece of Hahnemühle rag paper to work with. Guidelines insisted their work should be ‘curious’ and contain text.

Each piece within the Cabinet of Curiosities will be on sale for $80. The Cabinet can be viewed at the Saint Ignatius Art Show from Friday 9 August to Sunday 11 August as part of the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival.
