South Australia’s largest visual arts festival SALAhas kicked off, featuring over 10,000 artists and 706 events. Immerse yourself in exhibitions, tours, and unique artistic expressions throughout August

The South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival, Australia’s biggest open-access visual art festival, is in full swing from today, showcasing over 10,000 artists in 706 exhibitions and artistic events across Adelaide and regional South Australia throughout August.

Acting CEO of SALA, Bridget Alfred, said, “South Australians passionately support festivals, whether it’s football or the Arts. With more than 1 million attendees each year, the visual arts are accessible to everyone, and we have incredible talent to discover. This August, SALA Festival will illuminate studio doors, galleries, and even unexpected places with art, allowing everyone to experience emotions ranging from delight to consolation through locally and internationally recognised art.”

This year’s festival introduces the SALA Hub at ILA Light Square, a central point for various activities including The Light Room Gallery, which features the exhibition ‘Proximity’, and the Light Room Lab and Light Room Bar hosting events such as the SALA Slide Night, creative workshops, and more.

Beyond the hub, attendees can experience the Karoonda Silos Bus Tour led by artist OAKEY and the Port Adelaide Enfield Bus Tour hosted by Tony Kearney, both offering unique behind-the-scenes arts experiences.

Walking tours are also a key highlight, exploring themes from street art to First Nations art, and even a dog-friendly art tour option for exploring Adelaide’s city galleries with pets.

Featured artist for SALA 2024, Julia Robinson, will showcase her latest exhibition, ‘Split by The Spade,’ at Adelaide Central Gallery. The exhibition explores themes connected to pre-Christian rituals and the natural cycles as part of Robinson’s engagement with the ‘folk horror’ genre.

The 2024 program also features renowned artists like Roy Ananda, Laura Wills, and Nici Cumpston, among others, alongside emerging talents, ensuring a diverse range of artistic expressions.

The SALA Festival transforms the entire state into an immersive art scene, with exhibitions in unconventional spaces like cafes, community halls, and wineries, encouraging visitors to discover art in their everyday surroundings.

To navigate the extensive array of exhibitions and events, attendees can download the free SALA app or check out the SALA website here.

With its vast scope and diverse offerings, the 2024 SALA Festival promises a month-long celebration of South Australian artistic talent and creativity, inviting everyone to explore and engage with the visual arts.
