Painters, photographers and 3D artists, can win $3K in the latest Watershed Creative Prize

The City of Salisbury’s Watershed Creative Prize is now open to submissions from locals and beyond for works relating to the theme of Salisbury as a place to call home.

The City of Salisbury’s Watershed Creative Prize is now open for submissions and offers up to $3,000 for winners in multiple categories.

Note that the submission date has been extended and submissions are now open until 5pm Sunday, June 8.

For the 2025 edition of the annual art prize, the theme is ‘Spirit of Salisbury – A place to call home’. This is a fantastic opportunity for emerging artists to hone their craft and gain exposure. Entries will be curated to reflect a sense of community from the best submissions that ring true to this year’s theme.

Artists are encouraged to reflect on what being part of a community means to them. They might also consider who they think of when they think of home, what comes to mind when they think of the City of Salisbury, and where they feel most at home.

Emerging artists will have the opportunity to show off their masterpieces, with an exhibition of selected works open to the public from Wednesday 25 June to Sunday 27 July 2025 in the John Harvey Community Hall at the Salisbury Community Hub.

Submissions are open until 5pm Sunday, June 8, and are available to all community members, including artists living outside of the City of Salisbury council area. The competition is open to all South Australians, not just those living in the City of Salisbury.

The prize is comprised of two main categories. The ‘traditional’ category encompasses painting and photography, while the ‘3D’ category is open to sculptures, pottery, ceramics, metalwork, woodwork, crafts, and up-cycled creations. Artists can submit as many works as they like, though only two pieces may be selected as finalists.

The prize winners will be revealed at an awards night on Friday May 9th. In each of the two main categories, winners will receive $3,000 and runners-up will take home $1,500.

There is also a special category aimed at nurturing young talent in the Salisbury area. Artists aged between 12 to 25 are eligible for the Youth Creative Artist Prize, which offers a prize of $700 in both the Traditional and the 3D categories.

Mayor Gillian Aldridge OAM and Leandro Lopez Digon, Manager of City Shaping

Mayor Gillian Aldridge OAM said, “We are proud to again stage the Watershed Creative Prize, which recognises the amazing creativity of our community.”

“I am really looking forward to seeing how people reflect the great spirit, of and in, the City of Salisbury and hope the recognition will help them as they continue their artistic journey.”

Watershed Creative Prize 2024 Winner Tamika Daviess

The Watershed Creative Prize not only highlights artistic talents, but it also acts as a stepping stone for emerging artists. Previous winner Tamika Daviess clinched the Youth Traditional Prize in 2024 with her poignant painting of a Grey Headed Flying Fox mother and baby.

“I entered to promote my artistic skills and passion towards protecting our endangered species,” Tamika said. “Winning first prize was a new experience and a great achievement as a young artist, plus I have been able to reinvest my prize into my art.”

This competition is an excellent opportunity for local artists to gain exposure and earn accolades in a supportive community environment, contributing to the cultural fabric of the region. Now is the time to showcase your art. Who knows what exciting opportunities might come your way!
