Sammy J & Randy in The Inheritance – 2012 Adelaide Fringe

Presented by Laughing Stock Productions
Reviewed Tuesday 21st February 2012

The Inheritance is one of those joys of life, a witty comedy.

Sammy J and his best friend/acquaintance Randy, who just happens to be a large purple puppet, set out on a journey and they take us with them through poverty, riches, secret chambers, ghosts, family skeletons, murder, Heathrow car bookings, an intimate look at Dame Judi Denchs health problems, and other mysteries of life, and somehow manage to keep the whole thing together by having the show revolve around filling in the census.

If this seems mind boggling enough, add set and costume changes, songs, and the occasional unexpected distraction from outside the venue, and you will be absolutely in awe of these two performers and their ability to ad lib whilst still keeping within what is, obviously, a tightly planned framework. Throw into this mix many very intelligent jokes and an ability to react to the audience, and you have an hour of enjoyment that will surface in your memory often enough to make you want to see each and every one of their forthcoming performances.

Apart from a tendency for the backing sound to drown out some of the delightful wit, which must have left the performers thinking that Adelaide audiences might not be quick enough to understand some of their jokes, the show was flawless, and impressive in its complexity and delivery; in fact, totally enjoyable. Thank you Sammy J & Randy (and the Princess Diana 15th anniversary commemorative kitchen mitt) for a great show.
