Yiros shop that claimed ‘SA’s best kebab’ nod to undergo full refurbishment in Adelaide’s West End

After 30 years, the shop is getting a full renovation and gearing up to reopen soon.

Awarded South Australia’s best kebab in 2023, despite being a yiros shop, Hindley Street staple Yianni’s Hellenic Yiros is getting a long-awaited refurbishment. Known for its tender charcoal rotisserie meats and unmistakable old-school charm that’s synonymous with a good feed, Yianni’s has temporarily closed its doors as it undergoes its first major renovation in more than 30 years.

The team behind the award-winning yiros shop shared an update on social media this month after receiving a heap of messages.

“Hey guys, customers and friends, just a little sneak peek and update due to everyone inboxing us asking ‘when is Yianni’s Yiros going to open again?’ Up to now we have fully gutted the shop…” the post said.

So, when is it reopening? Initially, Monday 13 June was the goal, but with the mid-month date having come and gone, it’s clear there’s more work to do.

The renovation has taken the shop’s interior right back to bare bones, with the entire inventory of equipment removed to make way for what’s to come. And what’s to come is a sparkling new space with a “brand-new counter,” “granite top benches,” and “brand-new charcoal rotisserie fridges.” The venue is also catering for accessibility, with electrical wheelchair access included in the upgrade.

“You will see a very new and improved brand-new Yianni’s,” the post continued.

Yianni’s says the revamp is aimed at improving the safety and hygiene of the restaurant, two areas that have dated over three decades of service.

One thing we’re expecting though, is Yianni’s won’t shy away from making its prized menu items. It’s looking likely that all the favourites, ABs, yiros, and hot chips, will be back very soon. At the time of writing, the original menu is still hanging proudly on the wall, and if that’s anything to go by, the shop’s raw, cult charm isn’t going anywhere.

It’s clear that it’s not just any yiros shop, with an impressive following commenting on social media every day to check in for a reopening announcement. Yianni’s has long been a go-to for late-night revellers and anyone chasing a solid feed before a night out at one of Adelaide’s many events. The restaurant’s cult-classic status was solidified in 2023, when it took out the title of South Australia’s Best Kebab in a delicious.100 list.

The team is now waiting on the final painting work and a few other finishing touches. While we’re yet to find out the official reopening date, it’s likely we’ll be devouring juicy, garlicky yiros and digging into saucy ABs at the new and improved Yianni’s very soon.
