SA’s COVID-19 streak ends with new case

Today’s case is a woman in her 20s who arrived from overseas, went straight into hotel quarantine and tested positive to COVID-19 on her day 12 test.

There has been one new case of COVID-19 today however this case represents an old infection and poses no wider risk to public health.

There have now been a total of 466 cases reported in SA.

Today’s case is a woman in her 20s who arrived from overseas, went straight into hotel quarantine and tested positive to COVID-19 on her day 12 test.

Further serology testing has confirmed the result represents an old infection and there is no risk to public health.

The woman remains in hotel quarantine in SA and is not considered an active case but as this is the firs time she has returned a positive test, the case has been added to our state tally.

The woman returned a negative day 1 test, however it is not uncommon for people with an old infection to return both positive and negative results on subsequent tests as the virus continues to shed.

There are no active cases in SA and 462 people have been cleared of COVID-19. There have been four reported deaths from COVID-19. More than 416,500 tests have been undertaken.

If you have, or if you know someone with symptoms of COVID-19, encourage them to seek testing.

Once you get a test, return home immediately and wait for your results. If you receive a negative test result, you should still stay at home and not attend work, school or childcare until you are feeling well again.

Do not go to public places if you are unwell – this includes work, education, childcare, shopping centres, sporting events, social or religious gatherings.

Everyone must continue to follow measures that will help stop the spread. Practice good hygiene, keep 1.5 metres distance from others and stay at home if you are unwell.

People experiencing any of the following symptoms should be tested for COVID-19:
• Fever or chills (in the absence of an alternative illness that explains these symptoms)
• An acute respiratory infection e.g. symptoms of cough, sore throat, runny nose, or shortness of
breath
• Loss of smell or alteration in the sense of taste
