SA’s emerging vino variety leaders Artwine to launch two new drops with Mediterranean focus

Artwine are an SA winery leading the game in Mediterranean varieties around Australia.

Artwine is one of SA’s renowned wineries who are nationwide leaders in emerging varieties with Mediterranean heritage. The winery has an impressive collection of 18 varieties, which make up their 21-wines range.

Artwine will be adding to their outstanding collection this year with two new varieties, the Grenache Gris (French white variety) and Sangiovese (Italian red).

“Grenache Gris is a French variety that originates form a region called Roussillon in France. We made a small amount last year and entered it into the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show last year and it won gold,” Artwine co-owner Judy Kelly says.

It’s no surprise the pioneering winery took out the award. They have won more than 37 trophies and numerous medals over its 15-year history.

“Winning all those awards is no easy feat. Some wineries go through their entire life without winning any trophies, ” Judy says. It is very satisfying and thrilling to have your wines recognised by wine judges and peers.

“The awards are for emerging varieties that are not only new to Australia but are estate grown and single vineyard. We have the largest range of emerging wines under commercial production in SA.”

Those alternative varieties are what make Artwine so special. Founded by Judy and Glen Kelly, the family-run business has been operating and bringing a large range of new-emerging wine varieties, also known as alternative varieties, to the regions since 2008.

“Everything is Estate Grown. We planted these varieties over 20 years ago as we were in love with Mediterranean wines – they’re old-world wine varieties which the Europeans have been drinking for years and are incredible,” Kelly says.

“We are a boutique winery that focusses on our vineyards ensuring the fruit is exceptional. We’re passionate about the wines we produce and they’re all super food friendly and very approachable”

Glen and Judy spent years researching here in Australia and overseas, to ensure the right varieties would be grown in the right locations. This research confirmed that the Mediterranean climates of the warmer Clare Valley, and the cooler Adelaide Hills, were perfect for their choice of the emerging varieties they planted.

It’s their dream is to leave a legacy of one of the largest plantings of emerging varieties in Australia, all growing in beautifully managed, sustainable vineyards.

They’ve recently planted a new Italian variety, Falanghina, which can be enjoyed in a couple of years’ time. Artwine believe they are the first to plant in the Clare Valley which is yet another exciting milestone.

“It originates from the same region as Fiano and we have Australia’s most awarded Fiano so we’re excited and confident that the variety will excel,” Judy says.

You can enjoy all of Artwine’s varieties at its renowned cellar door in the Adelaide Hills which is known for its lush green lawns and olive tree-lined paths that lead through perfectly manicured hedges to the breathtaking views of the vineyard. And of course, it focuses on exceptional hospitality and unrivallled tasting experiences. In addition, they serve insta worthy beautiful local produce platters daily.
