It’s a big call, but I am willing to make it. There is no better combination than summer, sunshine and sunflowers.
For me, sunflowers transport me back to my childhood, when they would line the streets of our neighbourhood. It added a vibrance to the community; an energy that was drawn from the idyllic sea of yellow.
Atkins Farm, in the Adelaide Hills, is preparing for another busy sunflower season, where you can get up-close-and-personal with these stunning flowers. Originally scheduled for December, the blooming season has been delayed due to the unusually wet spring.
Patience is a virtue, and the result will be spectacular. The sunflowers are slowly growing, and they’re currently set to bloom in mid-late February. And the best bit is that you can pick your own sunflowers once you’re there, and bring them home where they can take prime position on the mantelpiece.
Prompted by their love of gardening, the team at Atkin Farm decided to embrace the space and plant a paddock of sunflowers. In early 2022, the farm was opened to the public with an invitation to “pick your own sunflowers”.
What they didn’t realise, was the popularity of such an event. The 2022 sunflower season brought thousands of visitors to the farm, creating a community, sunshiny vibe.
Each picking session will be 30 minutes, and visitors will be asked to bring their own snips/secateurs and bucket.
Atkins Farm is located in Meadows, 50 minutes from Adelaide nestled in the Adelaide Hills. Atkins Farm ‘Yarrowee’ has been owned by the same family for three generations who have worked the property as a sheep and potato farm. The current owners have reinvigorated the farm, bringing warmth and charm to this country property.
