SA’s first female-founded laser vision clinic is transforming eye care and paving the way for other women

Dr. Aanchal Gupta is leading SA’s only female-founded laser vision correction practice, bringing world-class technology, personalised care and industry-first innovations to Adelaide.

Thanks to South Australia’s first and only female-founded, fully independent laser vision correction practice led by refractive surgeon Dr Aanchal Gupta, Adelaide is seeing the world through a new lens. It’s been a field that’s long been dominated by men, but Dr Gupta is reshaping the world of eye care, proving that precision, innovation, and compassion are a powerful combination.

Dr Aanchal Gupta has emerged as one of Australia’s most respected voices in refractive and corneal surgery, driven by a mission to make advanced eye surgery accessible to patients right here in Adelaide. As South Australia’s first female surgeon to establish her own laser vision correction clinic, she has achieved a milestone that combines world-class innovation with meaningful representation in the field.

Beyond her pioneering local work, Dr Gupta holds positions with several esteemed international organisations, including the World College of Refractive Surgery & Visual Sciences (WCRS&VS), the International Council of the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS), and the Educational Committee of the American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgery (AECOS), roles reserved for leaders who shape the global direction of the specialty. She is also a regular presenter at international conferences and continues to contribute to ongoing research and development in cataract and laser vision correction.

“The core of what we do at IVISION LASER is vision correction,” shared Dr Gupta. “We care for a wide spectrum of patients, from people in their twenties seeking freedom from glasses and contact lenses, to older adults in their seventies and eighties undergoing cataract surgery. At every stage of life, there are solutions that can help people move away from visual aids, and that’s exactly what our practice is built around.”

IVISION LASER treats short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia (reading-glasses dependence). “Many people don’t realise that even in their 40s and 50s, there are laser and lens-based options that can reduce or eliminate their need for reading glasses altogether,” she said. “And as patients progress into their later years, similar principles apply when they undergo cataract surgery, we can still correct their vision to support long-term independence from glasses.”

On-site, the team operates using some of the most advanced laser platforms in the country, offering procedures such as SMILE Pro®, LASIK, PRK, implantable contact lenses (ICLs), and a full suite of presbyopia-correcting and lens-based solutions tailored for patients from their 40s right through to cataract surgery years.

Dr Gupta makes sure innovation is at the forefront. She was the first in Australia to introduce Allotex® technology, and the first in South Australia to offer PresbyMAX® and several new presbyopia-correcting lens options.

Her approach isn’t one-size-fits-all, as every procedure is customised to the individual, using advanced corneal mapping and biomechanics to make sure of lasting visual clarity and comfort. It’s a blend of technical mastery and personal connection.

“Laser vision correction is ultimately about freedom. It frees people from relying on glasses the moment they wake, and it avoids some long-term risks that can be associated with extended contact lens wear. For both visual independence and long-term eye health, laser vision correction remains an excellent option — provided that patients are carefully assessed and fully informed. We always take the time to discuss an individual’s unique risks and suitability so they can make the safest, most confident decision.”

Speaking about her own practice, Dr Gupta added, “I’m fortunate to have trained extensively in refractive and corneal surgery, and I’m committed to staying at the forefront of the field. At IVISION LASER, we’ve invested in advanced industry-leading diagnostic technology. This allows us to understand each patient’s eyes with exceptional precision before surgery, which in turn helps us consistently deliver outstanding visual outcomes.”

The clinic has been designed to be comforting and calming. The modern space reflects Dr Gupta’s patient-centred philosophy. Including touches like a massage chair, relaxed aesthetics and a team that treats every visitor like family that sets the tone for an experience that feels as luxurious as it is transformative.

“Presentation matters, and building a strong brand means ensuring every detail reflects the standard of care you deliver. I engaged a leading architect and interior designer to create the space, followed by an experienced builder to bring that vision to life. We were intentional with every choice, premium fittings, an integrated sound system, a coffee station, waiting rooms with calming aromatherapy, carefully selected flooring and panelling, and a layout designed to support a seamless patient workflow.”

Whether it’s helping young people ditch their glasses or giving grandparents the joy of seeing clearly again, Dr Gupta’s practice is redefining what it means to see and lead with vision. In an industry where women remain underrepresented at the top, her success is an exciting step for South Australia, showing that when women lead, the view truly is clearer.
