SA’s Greek community hosts vibrant Blessing of the Waters festival at Henley Beach this Sunday

Join the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia for the annual Blessing of the Waters and a rich cultural festival at Henley Beach this Epiphany Day. Experience traditional dances, live music, and delicious Greek delicacies.

The Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia (GOCSA) is set to host its annual Blessing of the Waters ceremony this Sunday, January 12th to mark Epiphany Day. This event, which integrates deep cultural and spiritual traditions, will be held at the Henley Beach foreshore in Adelaide, drawing a significant crowd from various communities across the region.

The Epiphany Day celebration is particularly notable for its ritual of the Blessing of the Waters, where attendees, led by clergy and accompanied by parishioners, will commence a procession from the start of Henley Jetty at 12pm. Participants will walk to the end of the jetty, culminating in the symbolic act of diving into the waters to retrieve a cross. This act is rich in spiritual meaning, denoting spiritual rejuvenation and inner cleansing, as it commemorates the baptism of Christ in the Jordan River by John the Baptist.

Once the ceremonial aspect of the day concludes, the festivities will transition into a vibrant Greek Festival. The event promises a rich programme featuring traditional dance displays from the GOCSA Dance Academy and the Pontian Brotherhood of SA. Adding to the multicultural celebration, performers from the SLAVA Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Adelaide will also present a special cultural showcase.

The festival will also have live music from local ensemble ‘Kerasma Live’, which will provide entertainment throughout the event. Attendees can also enjoy a selection of traditional Greek food and desserts, including the popular loukoumades (Greek honey puffs), known for their delicious taste.

The Premier of South Australia, Peter Malinauskas, shared his thoughts on the event, saying “We celebrate the strength and unity of the spiritual ties that bind the Greek diaspora here and around the world. Your festival, staged on the foreshore, exemplifies the renowned hospitality of the Greek community.”

Hellas Lucas, Chair of the GOCSA Cultural Committee, shared “Henley Beach Greek Festival incorporating the Blessing of the Waters, or as we know it ‘Theofania’, is an annual event that all South Australians can look forward to. It’s not only a wonderful opportunity for our Greek community to showcase its culture and traditions, but it’s also a chance for all South Australians to celebrate the state’s cultural diversity and promote cultural understanding.”

Epiphany Day, as celebrated by the Orthodox Church, marks the final holiday of the twelve days of Christmas, signifying the end of the holiday season with a message that resonates through community and spiritual life alike. With its scenic coastal setting, rich cultural performances, and communal spirit, the Henley Beach Greek Festival offers a day of festivity and reflection that is open to all South Australians.
