SA’s most expensive wine expected to reach record price at auction this month

Langtons’ 2025 Penfolds Rewards of Patience Auction features more than 2,000 rare and historic wines, including Australia’s most valuable bottle.

One of South Australia’s most expensive and iconic wines is going under the hammer this June, giving fine wine lovers, collectors, and connoisseurs a chance to bid on some of the most sought-after and historic wines in the world.

The Penfolds Rewards of Patience Auction has returned for 2025. Hosted by one of Australia’s premier fine wine destinations, Langtons, the digital auction is running until Sunday, June 29th, closing at 9pm sharp.

If you’re wondering what all the fuss is about, let’s just say this isn’t your average wine sale. This is the largest dedicated auction of Penfolds wines. On offer are rare vintage gems that date all the way back to the 1950s and large-format bottles that collectors dream of.

One of the stars of the show is a bottle of the very first vintage of Penfolds’ flagship wine, originally released as Bin 1, Penfolds Grange Hermitage 1951. It’s expected to fetch more than $150,000, which would make it one of the most expensive bottles ever sold in Australia. But that’s not even the biggest ticket item.

Also up for auction is a Grange vertical set, featuring every vintage from 1951 to 2018. This is an amazing collection that last sold in 2022 for a huge $430,000. Given the rarity of these sets and the fact that wines inevitably get consumed, corked, or lost to time, it might be the last chance for collectors to snap up a full run.

Michael Anderson, Head of Auctions at Langtons, said there’s a perfect storm forming for buyers and investors.

“As the auction market begins to warm to an interest rate cut, it’s the wines of Penfolds, the most represented wine in the Langtons Classification, that savvy wine enthusiasts and investors are reaching for,” he said.

“This may be one the last chances to bid on a complete set of Penfolds Grange. These unicorn pieces
become rarer each year as bottles fail, wines are consumed and verticals are split. This is an incredible
version of a Penfolds Grange Set – one of the finest we have seen.”

It’s not just about headline acts either. The last Penfolds Rewards of Patience Auction in 2024, saw 2,000 bottles up for grabs, including highly prized vintages like the 1955 and 1961 Grange, the Penfolds G Series trio of G3, G4, and G5, and collector favourites like Bin 4 Grange Hermitage and Bin 65 Grange Shiraz. The Bin 4 Grange Hermitage for an impressive $35,400, g3 Shiraz for $10,300 and Bin 65 Grange Shiraz for $6,478.

The name Rewards of Patience is inspired by the book, ‘Penfolds: The Rewards of Patience’. Written by Master of Wine Andrew Caillard, the book is a guide to Penfolds. With the ninth edition due later this year, it’s a must-read for anyone interested in the brand.

For anyone with a passion for fine wine, collecting, or those who are simply curious, the Penfolds Rewards of Patience Auction is a rare moment to witness or join Australia’s luxury wine scene at its absolute finest.
