Rising Sun Pictures (RSP) has been awarded the 2024 Autodesk Design & Make Award for Accelerating Transformation in Media & Entertainment. The accolade was presented at the AU 2024: The Design & Make Conference in San Diego. This recognition is awarded to companies that excel in leveraging data, collaboration, and automation technologies to enhance efficiency and fuel business growth.
RSP earned this honour thanks to its innovative use of machine learning (ML) through its REVIZE™ technology, which facilitates rapid production processes and empowers artists. The technology combines machine learning with advanced visual effects (VFX) workflows, enhancing artistic capabilities and delivering flawless results for the filmmaking industry.
Jennie Zeiher, President of RSP, said, “RSP has always been at the forefront of visual effects innovation. This recognition by Autodesk not only highlights our pioneering work in machine learning for visual effects but also reinforces our stature as a global leader in this space.”
In 2019, RSP initiated a collaboration with the Australian Institution of Machine Learning (AIML) aimed at exploring the application of machine learning within the VFX industry. Following the success of several projects, a dedicated ML department was established, overseen by ML specialists Dr. John Bastian and Dr. Ben Ward.
REVIZE™, an ML-based VFX workflow, revamps traditional methodologies in the industry. It replaces older techniques used for facial replacements in films, such as CGI or 2D composites, which could sometimes yield less connected performances. This technology offers higher quality and in some instances, more cost-effective alternatives for film and TV productions. RSP has incorporated ML face swaps into high-profile projects including ELVIS and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
The dedicated machine learning team at RSP has contributed to more than 21 projects, including Deadpool, Wolverine, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, The Fall Guy, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. This team continues to expand, constantly pushing the boundaries of ML innovation within the visual effects sector.
Further developments in REVIZE™ are planned, with an aim to broaden its suite of tools and processes. Currently, the technology includes REVIZE™ Face and REVIZE™ Body, which are used in a variety of applications ranging from digital twinning to CG character replacements.
RSP’s early integration of ML technologies solidifies its position as not just a pioneer but as a leader in the global VFX industry. This capability allows the company to excel despite the challenges posed by the rapidly evolving entertainment landscape.
