SA’s smallest distillery launches First Release single malt whisky

South Australia’s smallest commercial distillery, Blackwood Brewhouse & Distillery, is making a big impact with the launch of its First Release single malt whisky. This limited-edition release offers just 13 exclusive 700ml bottles, making it possibly the smallest single malt whisky release ever seen.

Part-owner Jason Armfield says it’s likely the “smallest release of a single malt whisky you’ve ever seen,” and the distillery is already inviting expressions of interest from those keen to get their hands on one of the rare bottles. With only 13 available, this release is truly a collector’s dream.

While the distillery has previously focused on craft beer and gin, it was Cherie Armfield’s love of whisky that inspired the couple to expand their operations into the world of whisky-making. This passion for all things local and unique has resulted in a whisky that stands out from the crowd.

Crafted with careful attention to detail, the First Release whisky has a smooth, highly flavoured profile. Using New Zealand distiller’s malt, the whisky features rich vanilla, almond, and red fruit undertones, all because of the inclusion of smoked manuka malted barley.

The distilling process, which took place on-site, includes fermentation and maturation during Blackwood’s chilly winter months, lending the whisky a distinct and complex flavour profile that reflects the region’s unique climate and terroir.

Given the small-scale nature of the distillery, the First Release is a true rarity. Blackwood Brewhouse & Distillery is offering the 13 bottles through a ballot system to ensure a fair chance for interested buyers. Those wishing to purchase a bottle are encouraged to email [email protected] to enter the ballot, with the draw set for Sunday November 24th at the distillery.

The cost of each bottle is $250, and each purchase comes with an additional 50ml bottle of the release for tasting and sharing – a perfect way to enjoy this exclusive drop with friends or family.

This initial whisky release will be the only one for the next 1.5 years, after which the distillery plans to offer more frequent drops. Although Blackwood Brewhouse & Distillery does not yet have a cellar door location, the couple continues to focus on using locally sourced ingredients and experimenting with new flavours and techniques to craft their distinctive range of spirits.

While the distillery is currently not open to the public, Blackwood Brewhouse is known for hosting popular seasonal events that often attract hundreds of visitors. Those interested in upcoming events can stay up-to-date via the distillery’s Blackwood Brewhouse Facebook page.
