South Australia’s three best sausage rolls have been announced at the Royal Adelaide Show, with local politician Kyam Maher casting the deciding vote for this years competition.

Once again, the Royal Adelaide Show is teeming with an extensive list of competitions this year. In the food and beverages section, you will find awards for everything from chocolate, beer and cider, wine, dairy products, and coffee. For the Class 12: Four Standard Sausage Rolls competition, which was held on Tuesday, judges evaluated each roll based on its general appearance, baked colour, and glaze of each roll, as well as the quality of the pastry and the amount and filling of the meat.

Tasked with inspecting the rolls was celebrity-judge Kyam Maher, SA Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Attorney-General, and Minister for Industrial Relations. Maher, who’s known for his “particular fondness for a good sausage roll”, posted the email invitation to his Facebook page with the caption “Pretty much my favourite email of the year”, alongside a collage of sausage rolls he’s reviewed across SA.

Wielding an iPad and a well-suited judge’s pin, Maher tasted a range of sausage rolls from some of the state’s finest bakeries, giving each a score for categories such as “Evenness of bake”, “Thickness of pastry”, “Visual appeal”, and “Flavour, aroma, and eating quality”.

Taking home first prize was Akkerman & Dyer: a wood oven bakery and kitchen in Blackwood, known for its outstanding service and delicious baked goods. Their classic sausage roll received exceptional scores for its evenness of bake, visual appeal, and flavour.

Second prize was awarded to The Village Baker for their traditional roll. Located in the Burnside Village Shopping Centre, the bakery is locally-renowned for its contemporary interpretation of classic recipes, drawing influence from European baking traditions to produce uniquely crafted baked goods. The Village Baker has a celebrated history of prize-winning at the Royal Adelaide Show, taking home 1st Prize for Best Vanilla Slice in 2014, Best Christmas Pudding in 2013, and Best Bakery Lunch in 2009.

After already winning 1st prize for their White Block Loaf, CJ’s Bakery in Christies Beach placed third for their positively reviewed sausage rolls. Continuing their recent run of awards, CJ’s was awarded the 2022 Moi International Prize for Highest Mark in Savoury Pastries.

With the winners of many competitions yet to be announced, don’t miss out on the incredible variety of experiences at the Royal Adelaide Show, which will finish up this Sunday, September 8th.
