It’s no secret that the Adelaide Central Market is synonymous with great food and Adelaide’s festive identity. And this spring, one of its most-loved events is back by popular demand.
Seafood + Sounds returns on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 September, filling the Market with two days of seafood feasts, live music, roving performers and family fun.
The program is stacked with flavour.
The famous Chilli Crab Shack will once again take centre stage, with the Sprout team serving bowls of Spencer Gulf Blue Swimmer Crab cooked in a tamarind chilli sauce with egg noodles and Thai herbs. It’s messy, it’s addictive and it sells out every year, so bibs at the ready.
Si Sea will fire up a special pop-up across the weekend, with smoky seafood sausages straight off the barbecue, platters layered with Kingfish sashimi, oysters, mussels vinaigrette and abalone, plus flame-grilled tapas-style dishes paired with crisp Adelaide Hills wines from DAOSA.
Then there’s the cooking demonstrations, giving visitors a chance to learn from the state’s culinary stars.
Fair Seafood and home cook Geoff Staples open the program on Friday morning with a focus on seasonality and sustainability, before Karena Armstrong of McLaren Vale’s Salopian Inn takes the stage that evening with her fresh, Asian-inspired cooking.
On Saturday, Africola’s Duncan Welgemoed – a name almost impossible to miss in the Adelaide food scene – will be serving up his fearless, fire-driven style.
Food writer and fermentation expert Mandy Hall will co-host across the program, bringing her passion for produce and community into the mix.
Seafood tastes better with a soundtrack, and you’ll be slurping and shucking to beats by Brian Ruiz, LENI, Jazz in Cheek and the Atlantic Street Band, whose roaming sets of brassy jazz and upbeat rhythms will echo through the laneways.
The kids are also well catered for, with Saturday morning dedicated to sea-themed fun activities. Little Picassos will host a free sea creatures art workshop, while the Gouger dining area becomes an ocean playground with face painting and plenty of colour.
Seafood + Sounds has cemented itself as one of the Market’s signature events, a chance to celebrate South Australia’s seafood, connect with local producers and soak up an atmosphere like no other.
Whether you’re cracking into chilli crab, sipping wine with a freshly shucked oyster, or dancing along to a roaming jazz band, it’s the Central Market at its vibrant best. And this year, we’re treated to the fun before September ends!
