As part of the re-opening weekend gala of the majestic Regal Theatre internationally renowned cabaret star Michael Griffiths will perform the much loved songs of Cole Porter and Peter Allen in A Grand Night at The Regal at 8pm on Saturday 17 October.
Michael graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) with a Bachelor in Music Theatre in 1999 and has a Diploma in Music Composition.
He won the Helpmann Award for Best Cabaret Performer in 2016 for his Cole Porter tribute and was nominated for a Green Room Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Bob Crewe in Jersey Boys.
To lovers of cabaret he needs no introduction as he continues to delight audiences across Australia and beyond to New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Hong Kong, Auckland and Edinburgh Fringe.
Born in Indiana in 1891 a gifted composer and lyricist, Cole Porter created songs and the music for Broadway shows such as Anything Goes and Kiss Me, Kate.
Porter handled both music and lyrics with ease, and conquered Broadway and Hollywood with his witty songs including “Night and Day” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.”
Other notable songs Porter wrote include “Begin the Beguine” (1935) and “It’s De-Lovely” (1936). His talents found a home on the big screen as well with “Easy to Love” (1936) and “In the Still of the Night” (1937) written for the movies.
Peter Allen, singer, songwriter and entertainer and undoubtedly one of Australia’s favourite sons was born in Tenterfield, New South Wales in 1944.
A cheeky, exuberant performer Allen produced a number of enduring favourites including “Tenterfield Saddler”, “Arthurs Theme”, “Don’t Cry Pout Loud”, “I Go To Rio” and “I honestly Love” amongst many more.
