Severe thunderstorm warning issued for parts of South Australia, residents urged to take precautions

Severe thunderstorms are forecast for parts of South Australia, with potential damages from winds, flooding, and hail.

As severe weather impacts various regions across South Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology has issued multiple warnings on Monday, 2 December 2024, concerning severe thunderstorms moving across the state. Residents in parts of Flinders and the North East Pastoral districts are advised to brace for potentially dangerous conditions including damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and large hailstones.

Severe thunderstorms, driven by a moist and unstable atmosphere along with an upper trough, are expected to affect locations such as Moomba, Hawker, Innamincka, Arkaroola, areas east of Lake Frome, and along the Strzelecki Track south of Moomba. These areas could experience damaging winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding, and the formation of large hailstones.

The State Emergency Service (SES) has provided a series of precautionary steps for residents:
– Secure or put away any loose items around property.
– Move vehicles under cover or away from trees to prevent damage.
– Avoid contact with fallen power lines.
– Avoid driving, riding, or walking through floodwaters.
– Keep away from creeks and storm drains.
– Stay indoors and away from windows during storm activity.

Meanwhile, residents in the Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges, Mid North, Murraylands, and Upper South East districts saw earlier warnings cancelled as the severe thunderstorms ceased in these areas. Recorded rainfall in these regions included 21.2 mm at Athelstone and 19.2 mm at Verdun, both within a 30-minute period ending 3:05pm.

For those in the Adelaide Region, including Mount Barker and Adelaide Hills among others, the immediate threat has subsided. However, officials will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates if conditions change.

In response to the statewide severe weather conditions, a Tier 1 extreme weather response has been activated to assist those experiencing homelessness. Notable services providing extended support today include Baptist Care’s Westcare Centre in Adelaide, which will operate until 6pm. The Adelaide North West Homelessness Alliance and the Toward Home Resolve Team are conducting assertive outreach throughout the day.

The Homeless Connect SA remains available around the clock, providing vital support to those at risk of homelessness. Individuals in need can reach this service by calling 1800 003 308.

Warnings and updates regarding severe thunderstorms can also be accessed through TV and radio broadcasts, as well as directly from the Bureau of Meteorology’s website at www.bom.gov.au. Alternatively, the public can call the Bureau at 1300 659 210 for the latest information.
