A statewide Severe Weather Response has been activated for people sleeping rough as damaging winds and rainfall move across South Australia.

A statewide Severe Weather Response has been activated for people sleeping rough as damaging winds and rainfall move across South Australia.

The response will be active on Monday 1 June and Tuesday 2 June 2026, following a Severe Weather Warning from the Bureau of Meteorology for damaging winds across large parts of the state.

The warning comes as a strong cold front sweeps across South Australia today, bringing isolated damaging wind gusts to much of the state. A deep low-pressure system is expected to follow this afternoon, increasing the risk of damaging winds over western parts of South Australia before the system extends east towards the Adelaide region, central districts and the southeast on Monday evening.

Damaging winds averaging 60 to 70km/h, with gusts of up to 100km/h, are likely about the West Coast, Eyre Peninsula and Yorke Peninsula today before extending to the remainder of the warning area, including Adelaide, during Monday evening.

The Bureau has advised that damaging winds are expected to ease over coastal and low-lying areas, including Adelaide, from early Tuesday morning, before gradually easing over the Flinders Ranges and Mount Lofty Ranges during Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Locations that may be affected include Adelaide, Port Lincoln, Strathalbyn, Maitland, Whyalla, Mount Gambier, Ceduna and Port Augusta.

A 94km/h wind gust was recorded at Cleve at 7:07am, while sustained winds of 68km/h were recorded at Warburto Point, near Moonta, around 8:15am.

The Severe Weather Response is designed to support people sleeping rough during periods of dangerous weather. The supports and services available during an activation can vary depending on weather conditions, location and service capacity.

During activations, homelessness services and partner organisations may provide extra support such as increased daytime operating hours, increased staffing, extended street outreach, practical aid, and safe places for people to temporarily seek refuge during the day.

Anyone sleeping rough, or seeking information about available supports for people sleeping rough in their region, is urged to contact Homeless Connect SA on 1800 003 308. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The latest information about this activation, including affected regions and available supports, is available via sa.gov.au.

The State Emergency Service has also urged the broader community to take precautions while conditions are severe, including moving vehicles under cover or away from trees, securing loose items around properties and staying indoors, away from windows, during severe conditions.

Anyone in immediate danger should call 000.

Statewide supports provided by homelessness services and their partners may include:

  • increased daytime operation hours and/or staffing
  • extended street outreach
  • increased promotion of existing services
  • practical aid (clothing, water, food, and blankets)
  • safe places to temporarily seek refuge from extreme weather during the day.

Overnight accommodation or shelter is not available under this activation.
