Severe weather warning and code blue issued ahead of showdown weekend

There’s a wild weekend of weather incoming, with severe weather warnings and a code blue issued. Here’s what to expect this showdown weekend.

There’s a wild weekend of footy incoming here in Adelaide as the Crows take on Port at Adelaide Oval this Saturday night, in a very exciting and highly anticipated end-of-season showdown. Unfortunately, there’s some equally wild weather scheduled, bringing freezing temperatures and lots of rain to the city, which might put a slight dampener on the festivities.

Most of the predicted rain is expected before the weekend kicks off. On Friday, there is a 100 per cent chance of showers with 15 to 30 mm predicted for the city. This is paired with a maximum of only 13 degrees and a chilly minimum of 8 degrees. The Bureau of Meteorology has also issued a Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds across large parts of South Australia, including the Mount Lofty Ranges. A deepening low-pressure system in the Bight is bringing powerful north to northeasterly winds averaging 55 to 65 km/h, with gusts exceeding 90 km/h, from early Friday, just as weekend festivities begin. Areas including Clare, Ceduna, and Leigh Creek are among those expected to be impacted, with winds turning west to southwesterly and intensifying as the front moves across the state. Residents are urged to secure loose items, move vehicles undercover, and stay indoors during severe conditions.

Showdown day doesn’t look to be too different either. There’s a maximum of 14 degrees predicted with a minimum of 9 degrees and 95 per cent chance of rain, with a possible 10 to 25 mm expected. Again, the day will be cloudy with winds heading north to northwesterly 25 to 35 km/h then turning westerly 20 to 30 km/h during the morning.

First bounce is at 7:40pm, with gates opening at 4pm. Between gates opening and the end of the game, chances of rain are about 70 per cent. While temperatures will get up to about 13 degrees, when gates open, air temperature will feel much colder at an estimated 9 degrees, dropping to just 7 degrees at game time and 6 degrees by the time it finishes. If you’re heading to the game, make sure to rug up and bring something to keep you dry!

Adelaide Oval advises that due to this week’s heavy rain, there will be no onsite public parking at Saturday’s Showdown. They encourage all ticketholders to make the most of free gameday public transport – your ticket unlocks free bus, train and tram trips to and from the game.

As for Sunday, the maximum will again be 14 degrees, with a slightly warmer minimum of 10 degrees. A 95 per cent chance of rain is forecast once again, with 4 to 15 mm predicted most likely in the morning and afternoon. Winds will head west to southwesterly 25 to 35 km/h, and then decrease to 15 to 25 km/h during the evening.

From Thursday to Sunday, there is also a statewide Code Blue Tier 2. In a Tier 2 Code Blue, people experiencing homelessness will have access to hot drinks, meals, bedding, blankets, sleeping bags, warm clothing, and maps of heated public spaces. Emergency contact lists will be provided, and services will operate with extended daytime hours and increased staffing. In addition to referrals to existing shelters, emergency accommodation may also be provided through hotel or motel stays for at-risk individuals, with outreach support available for those clients.
