South Australians across several regions are being urged to stay vigilant as severe weather conditions continue to impact the state. The Bureau of Meteorology has updated its severe weather warning for damaging winds, affecting the Mount Lofty Ranges, Kangaroo Island, Upper South East, Lower South East, and parts of the Yorke Peninsula, Mid North, and Murraylands districts.
The alert, issued early on Monday morning, highlights strong southwesterly winds expected to reach speeds of 90 to 100 kilometres per hour. The areas covered by the weather warning are most likely to experience these damaging wind gusts during passing showers or thunderstorms. According to the latest updates, the risk of damaging winds will focus on the Lower Southeast by late Monday morning and should subside by the afternoon.
Significant wind speeds have been recorded overnight, with Cape Jaffa experiencing gusts of 107 km/h at 11:52pm, Mount Crawford seeing winds of 105 km/h at 12:07am, and Mount Gambier recording winds of 103 km/h at 10:21pm.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
* Secure or put away loose items around your property.
* Stay indoors, away from windows, while conditions are severe.
Locations likely to be impacted by the severe weather include Mount Gambier, Kingscote, Naracoorte, Victor Harbor, Meningie, and Bordertown.
The Bureau of Meteorology has also updated its marine wind warning summary for South Australian waters as of 5:10am. Monday’s warnings detail gale warnings for the South Central Coast, Upper South East Coast, and Lower South East Coast. Strong wind warnings are in place for Adelaide Metropolitan Waters, Central Coast, Spencer Gulf, Gulf St Vincent, and Investigator Strait.
Previously issued warnings for the Upper West Coast and Lower West Coast have been cancelled.
This severe weather event is being driven by a vigorous westerly airstream affecting South Australia, which is expected to gradually diminish as a high-pressure system approaches the state later in the day.
