SOI38 is collaborating with Share to bring vulnerable Adelaide communities a ‘pay as you feel’ restaurant experience, this Sunday.

The dinner uses rescued food donated by OzHarvest that was otherwise destined for landfill.

Africola chef, Joel Tisato, and Africola boss waitress, Kate Richards, started the initiative to give back to vulnerable communities who might not be able to experience dining at a restaurant.

This Sunday 30 August, SOI38 will host the event that invites guests to come in for a three-course dinner. The event will run from 6pm until 8pm, with patrons asked to pay as much as they feel appropriate.

The money raised will be donated to the Hutt St Centre and Catherine House. Both organisations strive to help people facing homelessness.

“We want to invite vulnerable people and the general public to enjoy a restaurant experience together,” says Kate.

Share was inspired by the Everybody Eats initiative in Aukland. Everybody Eats aims to limit food waste by serving up delicious, chef-prepared, pay as you feel meals that feed bellies, not bins.

After looking into the subject Kate discovered that one in nine people globally are food scarce, while a third of the world’s food is thrown away.

Share aims to solve food waste problems here in Adelaide with the help of OzHarvest.

“We want to use as much rescued food as possible. We work with Oz Harvest every event; they give us mostly perishable items like fruit, vegetables and meat,” explains Joel.

At Share events, almost all of the food used has been diverted from landfill.

Share has hosted two previous events that have both been an incredible success. The previous event saw the team raise over $1,200.

“Our original plan was to host weekly events, but it’s kind of turned into ad hoc pop-ups,” says Kate.

“We have had amazing support from suppliers and friends. We haven’t had to pay for much, which means more money is being donated.”

Ideally the collaborations want to feed a 50/50 mix of patrons from vulnerables communities and the general public.

“If one of the guests is in a tough situation, the meal is on us. It’s our way of giving back to people struggling in the community,” says Joel.

The event held at SOI38 this Sunday will have a Thai-style feast prepared by Joel and SOI38’s head chef, Terry Intarakhamhaeng.

“SOI38 have been incredibly willing and have given up their kitchen, non-perisshable’s and are letting us use their whole restaurant to seat diners,” says Kate.

Share welcomes any restaurants who are wanting to collaborate to give back to the community.
