Less than two months after announcing a brand new menu, Beachside, a wine bar and restaurant at West Beach, has announced its immediate closure. The eatery took on new management less than a year ago, with a fresh set of branding and a fully updated menu.
With a lush brunch and lunch menu, the cafe was a fabulous spot for beachgoers. It’s no surprise that the sudden closure has left many locals puzzled.
Just this week, the community was also devastated to find out about the closure of beloved Grange cafe, The Cooks Pantry after a spectacular 16 year run. Despite what owners described as incredible community support, many hospitality venue owners have felt the squeeze of rising cost of living pressures.
Patron Marina described Beachside as a “very welcoming cafe” on social media, but cited the lack of nearby parking as a possible factor for the establishment’s closure, due to the popular West Beach Surf Club just down the road.
Other commenters mentioned strong local competition as a possible element in the cafe’s closure, recognising Beachside as a fantastic, relaxed alternative to the often full surf club.
Small business owner, Kelly, commented, “as a fellow West Beach small business owner, it is so important to support local! Sad news!”
Others cited excruciating running and renting costs as major challenges for owning local venues.
This year has seen a whole host of cherished venues close up shop, with the Adelaide hospitality scene seemingly taking major blows at every turn.
Venues including bars, patisseries and fine dining have shut their doors over the past twelve months, many citing rising financial pressures. Glenelg has been hit hard with the closure of locally revered restaurant Cardone’s in March, and the local branch of Hog’s Breath Cafe late last year.
It’s a testament to the growing challenge of the hospitality industry, that many of the venues we have seen close are well-established and highly popular. Enzo’s Ristorante closed a 25 year chapter this February, while Port Adelaide’s Folklore Cafe ended a nine year run.
Now more than ever, it’s important to support your favourite local venues and help to keep them open!
