Spring brings with it some of our favourite things — sunshine, blossoms, and now, Mekko Market have recently launched their new menu, featuring plates aglow with this season’s best produce.

If you haven’t yet checked out this contemporary slice of Scandinavia in Prospect, grab a friend and organise a brunch date.

The café / market flaunts a cosy yet minimalistic Scandi aesthetic. The building itself is heritage listed, which adds to its charming character. It was an old police station/courthouse called the “Shankhouse” — check the jail cells out back!

Dine inside amongst art and fashion or, better yet, Finnish (haha) the afternoon off sipping cocktails on their sunlit alfresco dining area and watch the world go by. Could life get much better?

And then you see their nutritious, delicious menu — and, yes, life just got better! The menu is Australian with a touch of Scandinavian and, just like the place itself, it’s so unique.

You’ll find berries, burgers, brunch favourites and — of course — their famous popcorn chicken. Catering to all diet types including vegan, gluten free and vegetarian, all dishes a freshly made with organic ingredients and locally sourced produce.

A popular favourite is Skagen, a dish made with organic field mushrooms drizzled in smooth, creamy dill sauce served on sweet potato rounds with poached eggs. Top it with shaved parmesan and smoked salmon. Yes, please!

On a similar Scandinavian tone, you might want to try their Finnish whipped semolina porridge, served with milk as is traditional in Finland.

For a satisfying indulgence, and perhaps something a little new, you can’t miss their Blueberry and Goats Cheese Sanga — don’t knock it till you try it.

Looking for something a little more familiar? You’ll still find classics like a good ol’ eggs Benny on charcoal sourdough with beetroot hollandaise.

Afterwards, grab a take-way Nordic tea or coffee and sip while you browse their market for some new additions to your wardrobe. You’ll find pre-loved brands and one-of-a-kind garments at bargain prices.

And if you’re looking to spring clean your wardrobe, Mekko have made it really easy. Simply rent a rack and wait for the money to roll in.

You can find Mekko Market & Café at 89 Prospect Road, open Wednesday – Monday 9am – 4pm.
