If you’re a wine lover, there’s no better place to explore than South Australia, a region renowned for its wide range of award-winning of vineyards. From the picturesque landscapes of McLaren Vale to the historic allure of the Barossa Valley, every sip tells a story. But tucked away in the Riverland Wine Region lies a gem that stands out not just for its exceptional wines, but for its commitment to sustainability and innovation – Byrne Vineyards.
Nestled in the scenic splendour of Scotts Creek, 5 minutes from historic Morgan, Byrne Vineyards is a family-run estate dedicated to crafting exquisite wines that are estate-grown and vegan-friendly. The family’s emphasis on sustainable farming practices is intrinsically linked to their mission of ensuring viable agriculture for future generations.
But it’s not just about grapes and wine. The family also nurture extensive wetlands, native bushland, and 136 hectares of vines spread across vibrant red sand and limestone-rich soils. Together, these elements form a harmonious ecosystem where viticulture flourishes.
Baron Hermann Von Rieben established the property in 1853 and developed the first post office and hotel in the area using the Murray River and surrounds, with Sidney Wilcox, in the early 1900’s transforming part of the property to produce fruit and vegetables. The Byrne family took over the estate in 1995, and they carried forward these legacies with a modern twist. Today, Rob Byrne, his daughter Petria, and grandson Will guide the operations, ensuring the vineyard’s dedication to sustainability, innovation and quality.
What sets Byrne Vineyards apart is their attention to the natural grape growing process and looking to innovative ways to make traditional varietals shine. For instance, their vine dried shiraz grapes are grown on a single site or single vineyard and are the backbone to this intense style. The process is when they implement ‘deficit irrigation’ at the end of the growing season, a few weeks before harvest. This dries out the grapes on the vine, resulting in an intense flavour profile whilst maintaining the vibrancy of the fruit. This technique creates a full-bodied, aromatic wine that finishes long and persistent on the palate. This results in a wine that reflects the diverse environmental factors that give it its individual aromas and taste. This is showcased in their flagship wine, Flavabom Vine-Dried Shiraz, an intense, must-try wine!
Byrne Vineyards offers a diverse range of wines, each with its own unique story. Their signature brands are Sidney Wilcox, Criminal Minds, Glamper, Flavabom, and Calcannia.
The Sidney Wilcox range of wines pays homage to producer, Sidney Wilcox. Blending history and modern winemaking techniques to create wines that are both traditional and contemporary. From their unique Field Blend White, Chardonnay and Grenache blend through to their robust Vine Dried Shiraz, each offers wine tasters a fulfilling journey.
For a wine experience that satisfies the palate, educates the mind, soothes the soul, and benefits the environment, Byrne Vineyards is a must-have.
A visit to Byrne Vineyard’s Scott’s Creek need not be limited to an afternoon. With ‘glamping’ eco-suites boasting stunning views of the wetlands, vineyards, surrounding bush, and cliffs, what else is there to do than pour a glass of wine, sit back, and enjoy the view?
These luxurious suites encourage guests to embrace nature’s magnificence fully. Only a two-hour drive from Adelaide’s CBD, Byrne Vineyards Eco-suites provide sanctuary for those seeking to disconnect and enjoy the camping ‘vibe’ sans hassle. Immersed within the sights, sounds (and flavours) of this historic vineyard, the revitalisation of spirits is a surety.
