Get Set For Adelaide’s Next Rooftop Venture, But What Will It Be?

This is amazing! Adelaide just keeps rolling on the cool train with this phenomenal announcement about a rooftop space…

Adelaide continues to amaze us with its total and utter coolness. So what has caught our attention this time? How about the fact that Adelaide City Council are looking at us, the people of Adelaide, to submit their ideas to transform the Grote Street Upark rooftop into something awesome. Hallelujah!

What an amazing initiative…

The space has already been used previously as an open air bar during Fringe Festival and has also been decked out as a temporary rooftop cinema. Is it just us, or is there something particularly sexy about a rooftop.

Obviously the ideas put forward would need to be commercially viable as the business would activate the space for three years.

“This is an opportunity for someone with a great idea they want to try out for two to three years, to have a go and make this space one people flock to, but it will require some creativity and innovation,” said Lord Mayor Martin Haese.

“It’s not often a space like this becomes available in the CBD, where the sky is literally the limit. We’ve received some good ideas already and we are really keen for others to put their ideas forward too.

“The area is reasonably large, the equivalent of more than 60 standard car parking spaces, and really could be used for just about anything. It’s adjacent one of the largest banks of solar PV panels in the city, which lends itself well to some kind of eco-tourism or sustainability related business or activity,” he said.

“Safety, attraction and viability will all play key roles in determining the final use for the space, so I really do encourage anyone with a great idea, supported with a solid business plan, to head to the Tenders SA website and submit their expression of interest.”

There will be some nitty gritty details that will need to be covered and assessed by Council administration including place-making, environmental management, commercial viability, infrastructure requirements and potential for success.

Once chosen, the Council will assist in creating an attractive space that best suits the needs of the community, and encourages city vibrancy.

We cannot wait to see what the space is transformed into! Bring it on!
