A new report from global travel app Skyscanner has revealed that more than 90% of Australians have either participated in or expressed interest in running events, with nearly half planning to take a running-themed trip in 2025.
Dubbed “run travel,” this growing movement sees Aussies combining their love of travel with the thrill of hitting the pavement – or the trail – in some of the world’s most spectacular locations, and it’s not slowing down.
From marathons in major cities to mountain trails in Europe or coastal jogs in Southeast Asia, Australians are embracing the idea that running is a way to explore the world. And Skyscanner is leaning into the trend with a campaign fronted by brothers Lachlan and Stefen Lamble, founders of the Lambros Army.
The duo, known in the Australian running community for their energy, expertise, and global escapades, have teamed up with Skyscanner to create a custom Runner’s Map, highlighting their top bucket-list destinations for a running holiday.
“Since we first started our running journey, we’ve uncovered some of the most breathtaking paths imaginable – and we’re only just getting started,” they said.
“Whether you’re chasing a local trail or flying across the globe to explore new horizons, there’s a perfect run waiting for you.
For the Lamble brothers, preparation is key.
“Our golden rule is to run smarter, not harder,” they say. “Whether you’re tackling the rugged trails of the Dolomites or cruising through the streets of Bali, having the right gear can completely transform the experience.”
It’s this mix of discovery, fitness, and adventure that’s enticing travellers. Nearly half of all Aussies surveyed say they’re motivated by the opportunity to explore new destinations, while 81% say they plan to extend their stay after their event, many by up to four days.
But while the appetite is strong, affordability remains a barrier. The biggest concerns cited are accommodation (52%), airfare (48%), and local transport (32%). But even so, over a third of travellers say they’d be willing to spend between $2,000 and $3,000 on a dedicated running getaway.
Skyscanner Travel Expert Jarrod Kris says planning ahead is the key to making run travel affordable.
“Features like Price Alerts and flexible date searches can help you find the best deals, while tools like our Savvy Search function use AI to create tailored itineraries based on your travel and fitness goals,” Kris says.
He adds that travellers can also save by embracing stopovers, turning a connecting flight into an opportunity to explore another city and sneak in a scenic jog.
“Whether it’s through a morning run past iconic landmarks or a casual jog through a new city park, it adds something special to your trip.”
For those looking to plan their run adventure, the Lambros Army and Skyscanner have unveiled a curated list of the top 10 running destinations with everything from alpine hikes to beachside sprints, and the Adelaide Hills even making the list.
