Adelaide City Council last night agreed to take the step forward in controlling smoking in Rundle Mall – a move welcomed by health organisations, shoppers and traders.
“Adelaide City Council is a level of government and we have social, environmental and economic goals we need to achieve and this ticks all our boxes,” Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said.
“It’s Council’s role to ensure that our visitors, shoppers, traders, workers and tourists have a comfortable and healthy experience in Rundle Mall. “
Council has listened and worked with the community. More than 80 Mount Carmel College students signed a petition to Council calling for a ban. The proposal also has strong support from Drug and Alcohol Services SA, the Heart Foundation and Cancer Council SA.
Cancer Council SA Chief Executive, Professor Brenda Wilson says: “Making Rundle Mall a smoke-free zone will not only help to promote a healthier lifestyle but it will also deliver what most people want. A recent survey revealed more than 70% of South Australians are concerned about exposure to passive smoke.”
“Adelaide City Council is to be commended for taking this pro-active step towards making Rundle Mall smoke-free.”
The proposed controls will include a portion of the streets coming from the Mall but will not include King William Street or Pulteney Street.
The amended By-Law will be released for public consultation before Council refers it to the Legislative Review Committee of State Parliament for adoption.
It’s anticipated that public consultation will take place in October 2011. Advertisements will be placed in the Advertiser and Messenger and information will be available on Councils Consultation website. Hard copies will also be available from Council’s Customer Centre, Community Centres and Libraries.
Under the By-law, the maximum expiation fee for the offence of smoking in the Mall will be $62.50.
