In the heart of Goolwa, the Wharf Wine Bar is getting a refresh—but it’s not losing its relaxed, local feel.

Housed in the historic Signal Point building, the bar has long been a go-to for locals and visitors looking for a laid-back drink, some live music, and a bit of banter. The story behind it begins in 2009, when family-run label 90 Mile Wines set up shop in Middleton, crafting estate-grown varietals from Padthaway and McLaren Vale that quickly earned a loyal following. In 2014, the opportunity came to relocate to the iconic Goolwa Wharf precinct, breathing new life into the space and transforming the business into what became known as the Wharf Barrel Shed. The relaxed setting, combined with local wine, craft beer and regular live music, struck a chord with the community—and the venue has been building on that momentum ever since.

The wine list champions 90 Mile Wines alongside other small South Australian producers, and local craft beer is on tap.

The food menu is built to suit the drinks—simple and local. Live music continues every Sunday from 2pm to 5pm, and regular events like Trivia and Wine Bar Bingo keep things lively.

Now, co-owner Chris Ramsey says the bar is evolving again, with a new look and a name tweak to Wharf Wine Bar.

“We’re really excited to be investing in the building and upping our game. It’s been a challenging few years for hospitality, but we’re committed to making sure the Wharf Wine Bar continues to grow and evolve,” Chris says.

In late June when the renovations kick off, the space will be given a modern update with polished concrete, exposed brick and timber accents, but the coastal, casual vibe is to remain.

“We’re definitely not going to become a snooty wine bar just because we’ve got new furniture. The regulars will notice a big difference, but for everyone else, it’ll still be the same lounge room vibe that we’ve built our business on,” Chris adds.

Plans are also underway to expand the bar’s food and evening offering to better serve the growing Goolwa community. But at its core, Wharf Wine Bar is staying true to what it does best: good wine, good people, and a laid-back time by the water.

The focus remains on delivering an exceptional experience, with a strong emphasis on local produce and community involvement.
