Socceroos set to ignite Adelaide Oval in crucial World Cup qualifier after seven-year absence

The Socceroos return to Adelaide Oval after seven years to face China in a critical World Cup qualifier on October 10. This match could pave their way to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Socceroos are set to ignite the Adelaide Oval with excitement as they prepare to clash with China on October 10 in a critical World Cup qualifier. This match marks the return of Australia’s men’s soccer team to South Australia for the first time in nearly a decade, specifically seven years since their last appearance in the City of Churches.

Premier Peter Malinauskas dropped the bombshell with a Facebook post declaring, “For the first time in 7 years, the Subway Socceroos will return to Adelaide.” Accompanying the announcement was a photo promoting the upcoming match, which is a definitive stepping stone towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Scheduled in the thick of the AFC third round qualifications, this fixture on October 10 could be a pivotal moment for the Socceroos. It represents the fourth of five games in Group C, where they face formidable opponents including Japan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Indonesia. The urgency for a win is high as only the top two teams from the group will secure automatic spots in the 2026 World Cup, planned to unfold across venues in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Reflecting on the past, the last time the Australian men’s team graced the Adelaide Oval was in 2017 when they achieved a victory over Saudi Arabia. Historically, their track record at the Oval is impressive, having won all three matches played at this venue this century.

Interestingly, the announcement follows a surge in interest in football in South Australia, especially after a closely watched friendly between the Matildas and China in May, which drew nearly 53,000 spectators to Adelaide Oval. The ripple effect of this event has been a substantial 24% increase in women’s football participation in the region according to Football SA. In total, approximately 1,300 additional female players are now engaged in the sport, inclusive of both newcomers and those returning after breaks. More than 80 new teams have been registered in local competitions, highlighting robust growth in football’s footprint in South Australia.

Supporting the surge in football participation, the South Australian Government has rolled out the Power of Her grants program, investing a significant $18 million to boost football programs and infrastructure aimed at nurturing talent and providing better facilities for women and girls. The initial round of these grants is already underway, with the application process set to open again in late 2024.

The return of the Socceroos to Adelaide Oval is not just a significant sporting event but also coincides with the region’s Spring festive period. October will also witness the commencement of the 2024 OzAsia Festival, starting from October 24 and continuing till November 10, which is expected to attract an influx of visitors to the state.

Fans eager to witness the Socceroos in action can look forward to snapping up tickets when they go live to the public at 2pm on July 22. This match promises not only to be a thrilling sports encounter but also a significant occasion that could potentially lead to the Socceroos’ qualification for their sixth consecutive World Cup.
