Soniquete – The Essence of Flamenco

Puerto Flamenco returns to Adelaide, as part of their Australian and New Zealand tour, once again taking to the stage with Adelaide’s own Studio Flamenco to present ‘Soniquete’.

Andrej Cikka poster 2015_smallIn 2011, with the assistance of the Australian National University and the Spanish Government, Studio Flamenco embarked on a collaboration with Seville-based flamenco artists Francesca Grima ‘La Chica’ and Andrej Vujicic.  Their Adelaide performance ‘Arte y Compas’ was described as ‘a whopping, gala of high-spirited flamenco’ with ‘excellent guitar work…infectious hand clapping and foot stomping that really gets the juices flowing’ (Australian Stage Online Magazine).

Since then the association between Adelaide-based Studio Flamenco and the Spain-based artists has flourished.  Touring together in 2013 they presented Peña Flamenca at the Ventana Festival in Victoria and in 2014 members of Studio Flamenco met with Andrej and ‘La Chica’ in Sevilla, Spain to plan their next collaboration.

In the meantime the two artists, with their Seville-based company, Puerto Flamenco, have travelled the world presenting the stirring sights and sounds of flamenco in Norway, Ireland, Portugal, Malta and Dubai.   Now, in 2015, the pair returns to Adelaide, as part of their Australian and New Zealand tour, once again taking to the stage with Adelaide’s own Studio Flamenco to present ‘Soniquete’.

Soniquete’ is the essence of Andalusian flamenco with virtuosic guitar and percussion, the haunting melodies of flamenco cante (song) and the stirring rhythms of flamenco dance.  Bringing together international and Australian artists, ‘Soniquete’ showcases the best flamenco this country has to offer invigorated by world-class guest artists from Spain.

While in Adelaide ‘La Chica’ and Andrej Vujicic will also conduct workshops in flamenco dance, palmas (hand clapping) and cajon (box drum) from 25 January 2015 at Studio Flamenco’s Clarence Park premises.

Studio Flamenco will also present the premiere of their interactive flamenco show especially for children ‘Ole! Flamenco Fun for Kids’ at the 2015 Adelaide Fringe from 13-15 March, Le Petit Grande, Gluttony.
