The sold-out Sounds by the River music festival has announced a venue change following emergency flooding in the Riverland region, with festival planners ensuring that tomorrow’s event will otherwise go ahead as planned.
Supporting one of the most exciting events for the Riverland region, the SA government has committed to $78,000 to the Sounds by the River music festival at Mannum on Saturday January 21, 2023.
Celebrating its 13th year, the show features Paul Kelly, Bernard Fanning, Missy Higgins, Mark Seymour, Vika & Linda and Ian Moss & Troy Cassar-Daley.
The financial package will cover the cost of relocating the event from its original Mary-Anne Reserve location to Mannum Golf Club following the River Murray flood emergency in the area.
Sounds by the River provides the flood-hit region with direct tourism expenditure of $2 million, and further expenditure of $1.8 million, benefiting the local economy by $3.2 million in total.
These benefits flow on to the neighbouring regions and districts of Murray Bridge and Palmer, the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu and Barossa.
“Regional tourism is a vital contributor to South Australia’s economy, delivering over 40% of overall visitor expenditure in the state,” said Zoe Bettison MP, Minister for Tourism.
“As such, it is important to invest in tourism experiences, including events that will drive visitation to regions, which is particularly important at present due to the current challenges being experienced by the region as result of the flood.”
Originally created to build the profile of the river region and boost economic return during drought, Sounds by the River has now been running for 15 years.
“Sounds by the River is a great fundraising event for local clubs and the tourism attributed to the event provides local economic investment,” said Simone Bailey, Mayor of the Mid Murray Council.
“These benefits flow on to the surrounding districts of Murray Bridge and Palmer, the Adelaide Hills and Barossa, plus transport bringing attendees from the Adelaide metropolitan area.
“It is great to hear the State Government is supporting this event with funding to help with additional costs due to moving the event away from the flooded Mary Ann reserve.”
In 2017 the festival entered the South Australian Tourism Awards Hall of Fame for its multiple wins for Festivals and Events.
The Sounds by the River festival is a critical event for the region with over 5,000 tickets purchased and accommodation booked out in Mannum. Wider regional accommodation is also heavily booked.
