South Aussie start-up launches zero-sugar hard seltzers with a twist

A new South Australian-owned brand, This and That Seltzer, is shaking up the drinks scene with its wine-based seltzers.

It’s official, hard seltzers have taken over! These days, it’s hard to go to a pub, club, or party without seeing someone sipping on a hard seltzer. From backyard barbies to dancefloors and Sunday sessions, these fizzy favourites are everywhere. But just when you thought the seltzer craze had reached its peak, there’s a new crew in town shaking up the South Australian seltzer game.

For those who might not yet know, a hard seltzer is flavoured sparkling water with a splash of alcohol, typically sitting between 4 to 6% ABV. Thanks to their lower alcohol content, these drinks are often lighter in sugar and calories than many traditional pre-mixed options, making them a popular go-to.

This and That Seltzer are the new kids on the block, ready to bring their take on the hard seltzer to the table. Launching this May, This and That has two flavours, passionfruit and watermelon, in their new wine seltzers. Each contains only 99 calories, no added sugar, and 1.4 standard drinks.

While you often find seltzers made of vodka, This and That are doing things a bit differently. This SA-owned, SA-made company are continuing this theme by making their drinks out of SA wines. With these first two flavours, both are made of 2024 Chardonnay.

Owner Sean Jolley has a background in working with wine, hence the theme in his new drinks. After studying business marketing, Sean spent time working in the wine industry, which sparked his love for wine.

“I really enjoyed working for big companies, but I wanted to get more hands on,” shared Sean.

“A friend of mine, Peter, who is also my business partner, and I one drunken night spoke about how wine isn’t catered towards the younger generation, and we really wanted to get younger consumers excited about wine.

“We knew that seltzers were a popping industry and an upcoming product at the time, so we thought of blending the two together. A few backyard experiments led us to this wine seltzer.”

Rather than the backyard experiments, Sean and Peter now have a team of experts making the drinks, but at the core it is still a bit of this and that.

“We want to target people that are maybe a bit unsure about wine, but love a seltzer, we’ve tried to mask a lot of those typical flavours. While doing this we’ve kept those really beautiful botanical characteristics of wine. While there’s the passionfruit and the watermelon there, you still get some aromatic and citrus forward flavours of chardonnay.”

Sean says there’s also new flavours in the works, so “watch this space!”

If you’re keen to get your hands on This and That, the launch is coming sometime this may. Sean recommends to keep an eye out on their socials for dates. If you’re anything like us, and super keen to try these as soon as possible, you’re in luck. Glenelg’s Sunset Bar have the seltzers in store ready to go for the next few weeks.

When the website launches, there will be a store locator on there, making it easy to see the stockists, otherwise they’ll be available to purchase direct from the website.
