New drive to support Bedford employees, by buying their locally made products

South Australians are rallying to support Bedford by buying products from its baking social enterprise—every purchase helps save supported jobs.

In a powerful show of unity, South Australians are once again being called on to do what we do best, band together and back one of our own.

When news broke that Bedford Group was preparing to enter voluntary administration, hearts sank across the state.

For decades, the disability support organisation has been a lifeline for thousands, providing employment, training, and purpose through its programs and social enterprises, including the much-loved Emmaline’s brand.

With more than 1,400 people living with disability at risk of losing employment and vital support, the community response has been swift, heartfelt, and practical.

In a statement overnight, Bedford expressed heartfelt thanks to the South Australian public for the overwhelming support shown in recent days.

“We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from the community, and we sincerely thank South Australians for standing with us,” the statement read.

As Bedford works toward stabilising its operations and securing a stronger future, many people have asked how they can help.

“There are several meaningful ways individuals across South Australia—and beyond—can support our purpose of creating more job choices and pathways for people living with disability.”

“One of the simplest ways is purchasing an Emmaline’s cake or packet of biscuits in your weekly shop.”

Thankfully, late on Sunday 27 July, the State Government confirmed it had reached a deal to keep the organisation afloat for now. While that announcement brought a wave of relief, it’s clear that community support will be critical in the weeks ahead.

That’s where Emmaline’s comes in.

Emmaline’s is Bedford’s social enterprise, producing a wide range of handmade products under a brand many Australians already know and love.

The story began in an Adelaide Hills kitchen in 1996, where Emmaline’s Country Kitchen started making fresh, homestyle baked goods. Today, their cakes, cookies, biscuits, and chocolates can be found in more than 1,200 outlets around Australia, from major chains to small grocers, gourmet stalls, and coffee shops.

Bedford acquired Emmaline’s in 2024, with the goal of empowering people living with disability through meaningful work in food production. The products are stocked nationally, and every purchase supports sustainable employment for Bedford’s supported team members.

These are the kinds of treats we already buy. But what if every time we stocked up, we were also helping safeguard vital jobs?

Local couple Pete and Dea, from the hobby Facebook page South Australia and Beyond with Pete and Dea, have taken to social media with that very idea, calling on South Australians to back Bedford by choosing Emmaline’s.

Although Pete has no official link to Bedford or Emmaline’s, he’s simply a kind-hearted local with a passion for helping the community. His message is clear.

“If we could save other South Australian businesses like Spring Gully, we can do it again,” said Pete.

“Buying a cake or packet of cookies might not seem like much,” he added. “But to someone at Bedford, it means a shift, a new opportunity, and a reason to keep showing up to work with pride.”

The response online has been passionate and growing fast. Supporters are tagging media outlets and sharing the message with friends and family in a grassroots push to amplify the call and make sure it reaches the right ears.

Every Emmaline’s product purchased directly supports employment for people with disability. It’s not just about saving a business. It’s about preserving dignity, independence, and community.

In a time when so much feels uncertain for Bedford, one thing is clear. South Australians know how to show up. We’ve done it before. We can do it again.

For those wanting to help, maybe together we can have our cake and eat it too.
