South Australia announces its 2024 Australian of the Year Award recipients

Environmental scientist and advocate Tim Jarvis AM has been named Australian of the Year for South Australia. Senior South Australian of the Year, Local Hero and Young Australian of the Year for SA has also been named.

In a grand ceremony held in Adelaide this evening, South Australia unveiled its recipients for the 2024 Australian of the Year Awards. These distinguished individuals will represent the state at the national awards scheduled for 25 January 2024.

Timothy Jarvis AM: 2024 SA Australian of the Year
Timothy Jarvis, an environmental scientist and advocate, has been recognised for his relentless efforts to combat climate change and biodiversity loss. He’s not just a scientist but also an author, filmmaker, philanthropist, and speaker. Among his notable contributions is the Forktree Project, aimed at restoring degraded farmland and conserving rare native plants. Tim’s adventurous spirit led him to re-enact iconic Antarctic explorations, advocating for Antarctica’s protection. His accolades include being named a Bragg Fellow by the Royal Institution of Australia and winning the Australian Geographic Society’s 2016 Conservationist of the Year.

Sister Meredith Evans: 2024 SA Senior Australian of the Year
Sister of Mercy, Meredith Evans, has been a beacon of hope for the vulnerable. Her life’s mission revolves around providing compassionate care to refugees, the homeless, and women in distress. In 2019, she pioneered the South Australian division of Young Mercy Links, focusing on social justice and advocacy. Her international outreach includes supporting the Jesuit Refugee Service in Cambodia, aiding landmine injury victims.

Rachael Zaltron OAM: 2024 SA Local Hero
Rachael Zaltron’s initiative, Backpacks 4 SA Kids, which began modestly in her carport, has transformed into a massive drive supporting vulnerable children across South Australia. The organization provides backpacks filled with essential supplies for children in distressing situations. Under Rachael’s guidance, the initiative has expanded its services, aiding families affected by domestic violence and homeless youth. Since its inception, the organization has assisted over 86,000 South Australian children.

Tiahni Adamson: 2024 SA Young Australian of the Year
Tiahni Adamson, a proud Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander woman, is a beacon for sustainability and Indigenous rights. With a degree in wildlife conservation biology from the University of Adelaide, she now plays a pivotal role at CH4Global, ensuring Indigenous knowledge is integrated into their projects. Tiahni’s advocacy extends to working with CSIRO on Indigenous education and being a voice for Indigenous justice, climate change, and environmental conservation. Her accolades include being named one of Science and Technology Australia’s Superstars of STEM and an InDaily South Australian 40 Under 40 for 2023.

These remarkable individuals, with their dedication and passion, are not just making a difference in South Australia but are inspiring the entire nation. Their stories serve as a testament to the power of perseverance, compassion, and innovation.
