South Australia celebrates Harmony Day today

It’s Harmony Day, a day to promote diversity and acceptance, and highlight inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians.

On March 21 each year, we celebrate Harmony Day, to promote diversity and acceptance, highlight inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, especially those from diverse cultural backgrounds and faiths.

Schools, workplaces, and communities across Australia have been coming together since 1999 to celebrate Harmony Day.

March 21 is particularly significant as it is recognised by the United Nations as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

In 2019, this day of significance was expanded to become Harmony Week – an occasion to recognise and celebrate the many amazing cultures and experiences that make up our great State and nation.

South Australia is a successful, harmonious and proud multicultural society. Our State’s cultural diversity is a great strength and brings with it a whole host of traditions and customs, religions, languages, festivals, events and cuisines!

Our diversity of cultures and our multilingual communities benefit our state’s economy, and connect us to the world to promote trade, investment and tourism with South Australia.

Recognising the importance of multiculturalism, the State Government remains committed to supporting our diverse community. In support of this commitment, an additional $16 million over four years has been allocated to programs that support the work of the multicultural sector.

Minister for Multicultural Affairs Zoe Bettison says that it’s important that the state comes together to celebrate our cultural diversity, and recognise and reflect on the benefits that diversity brings us.

“On 9 March 2023, I announced the development of the first South Australian Multicultural Charter. The Charter acknowledges our culturally diverse history and provides principles to promote a unified, harmonious, and inclusive South Australian community that values, respects and supports diversity.” she said.

“Everyone has a part to play in shaping the South Australian culture and contributing to a society that is fair and equal – for all.

“There are many opportunities to celebrate Harmony Week across the State. I encourage everyone to participate in Harmony Week activities, and to wear orange during this week to show your support for our cultural diversity and a united, inclusive State.”
