South Australia introduces inaugural Women’s Week to celebrate women and promote equality

South Australia introduces SA Women’s Week from March 1-8, 2025, to coincide with International Women’s Day, aiming to celebrate women’s contributions and advance gender equality across the state.

South Australia is celebrating its inaugural SA Women’s Week from March 1st to 8th 2025, coinciding with International Women’s Day. This new initiative is part of a global celebration aiming to spark dialogue around turning commitment into action and to inspire everyone to take action to advance gender equality in our State and beyond.

Community groups and organisations in South Australia are encouraged to participate by hosting events to inspire change, educate, and celebrate the achievements of women across diverse local communities.

The week’s activities will lead up to International Women’s Day on March 8th, which carries the UN Women theme ‘March Forward’ for the year. This theme underscores the need for progressive, decisive actions to shift from reflection to real-world impact.

This initiative follows significant governmental efforts, including the Royal Commission into Domestic, Family, and Sexual Violence initiated by the Malinauskas Labor Government. The findings of this commission, expected on July 1st this year, may provide crucial insights into combating gender-related challenges in South Australia.

SA Women’s Week events will be featured on the Office for Women website, providing a platform for visibility and participation from the wider community. Interested groups can list their events on the SA Women’s Week Calendar on the website, to include their initiatives are part of this historic week.

“We have achieved so much in our shared quest to advance equality and women’s rights.  Sadly, given the ongoing prevalence of violence against women and the persistent gender pay gap, we must continue our efforts,” shared Katrine Hildyard MP Minister for Women and the Prevention of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence.

“International Women’s Day and SA Women’s Week create moments for celebration; they are also milestones of accountability where we reflect on progress and what still needs to be done, as we march forward with courage and urgency to create lasting change.”

“South Australia’s first Women’s Week is a time to come together for reflection, joy, and inspiration while inviting the wider community to join in celebrating the remarkable resilience and diverse contributions of women throughout our state,” said Fiona Dorman, Chair, Premier’s Council for Women.

“Women’s Week reflects the ongoing efforts of community advocates, leaders, and changemakers dedicated to driving meaningful progress.”

The establishment of SA Women’s Week is a stride towards acknowledging and celebrating the significant role of women in shaping South Australian communities and making strides towards an all-encompassing equality. It promises to be a time of celebration, reflection, and movement towards creating a future where women are safely, equally, and robustly integrated into all aspects of public and economic life.
