South Australia tops nation in Housing Scoreboard

South Australia tops the HIA Housing Policy Scoreboard, thanks to its innovative Housing Roadmap and rapid implementation of over 100 housing initiatives, signaling significant strides in tackling the national housing crisis.

South Australia has scored the top position in the Housing Industry Association’s (HIA) Housing Policy Scoreboard, naming the state as a leader in housing policy nationwide. The scoreboard assesses each Australian state and territory on ten crucial housing supply policies and mechanisms that help the growth of the housing supply. The recognition highlights the state’s proactive measures in addressing the housing crisis under the Malinauskas Labor Government.

The HIA report specifically commended the Premier’s Housing Roadmap, which consists of over 100 initiatives made to help the industry construct homes more rapidly. South Australia was praised for its “advantageous blend of planning innovation, skills investment, and housing affordability policies,” which have set a benchmark in the national housing sector.

The state government’s implementation of this detailed roadmap has been swift and effective, with several initiatives already in place. Among these are the introduction of a pioneering infrastructure scheme, the establishment of a builders panel for small government-led projects, and enhancements in planning efficiencies that have reduced assessment timeframes. Also, as part of a substantial $1.5 billion expansion of the water and sewer network, 2000 metres of new water mains have been installed.

This distinction from HIA follows South Australia’s consistent performance in previous scorecards, where it also led the nation. The Property Council of Australia has recently identified a peak in confidence levels within the state’s property sector, the highest in Australia. The accolades continue with the Business Council of Australia recognising South Australia as the top state for business, praised particularly for its planning system.

“It’s a national housing crisis but State Governments are key to resolving the issues,” Nick Champion, the Minister for Housing and Urban Development.

“This is a Government that takes action.

“Through our Housing Roadmap we are making changes, introducing policies and funding considerable investments to increase the supply of homes.”

“The government is working with the property and development industry to unlock more land so they can build the houses we need now.

“As we continue to implement various initiatives from the Housing Roadmap we will make it even easier and faster to build more homes for South Australians.”

The state’s leading position in the HIA Housing Policy Scoreboard signifies a proactive and efficient approach to tackling the housing shortage, an issue that remains a priority on the national agenda. South Australia’s strategy serves as a model of how comprehensive planning and targeted policies can result in effective housing solutions. As these initiatives continue, the region looks set to hold its leading status in creating accessible housing opportunities for its residents.
