South Australia is rapidly becoming a hotspot for volleyball enthusiasts, as Adelaide prepares to host a series of high-profile indoor and beach volleyball events, as well as development and performance camps scheduled for July and November this year.
Volleyball Australia has officially announced that Adelaide will be the proud host of the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships for both the U19 and U23 categories. The championship will span four exciting days in July, taking place at the prestigious Lights Community & Sports Centre and the St Clair Recreation Centre. Following the championships, a National Junior Development Program Camp will provide young talents with an invaluable platform to refine their skills and reach new heights in the sport.
“The appetite for volleyball and beach volleyball in South Australia is very high and we can’t wait to bring these events to life,” Craig Carracher, President, Volleyball Australia says.
November will witness a flurry of beach volleyball excitement in South Australia, with a range of events scheduled over ten days. These events will culminate in a National Performance Program Camp, held at the scenic locations of Glenelg and the South Australian Sporting Institute (SASI).
Kicking off the beach volleyball festivities, Glenelg will host the opening round of the 2023/24 Australian Beach Volleyball Tour from 8th to 10th November. Just two days later, it will be the starting point for the 2023/24 Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Tour, catering to the U19 and U21 age groups.
These events are set to pave the way for Adelaide’s grand achievement – the hosting of the 2025 FIVB World Beach Volleyball Championships. This marks a historic moment, as it will be the first time the World Championships are held in Australia, a milestone announced by the State Government in June of last year.
The World Championships will take place on the courts of The Drive, North Adelaide. To transform this renowned tennis venue into a beach volleyball colosseum, approximately 1000 cubic meters of sand will be brought in. This endeavor is poised to create an electrifying atmosphere, setting the stage for an unparalleled sporting spectacle.
Anticipation is building as it is estimated that the World Championships, considered the most significant global event in beach volleyball, will draw more than 11,000 spectators from across the country and over 6,000 international visitors. This influx of volleyball enthusiasts will not only add vibrancy to the region but also spotlight South Australia on the international sporting map.
South Australians love their volleyball and beach volleyball. To play host to the FIVB World Championships in 2025 and now also the Australian Junior Championships and a series of development and performance camps in the lead up is very exciting.
“These top-notch sporting events further add to the state’s blockbuster events calendar, with the announcement coming hot on the heels of the Adelaide International, Santos Tour Down Under and the ILCA Laser Men’s World Championships,” Minister for Tourism Zoe Bettison says.
“In 2024 we will also welcome back a host of major events like the second editions of AFL Gather Round and LIV Golf Adelaide which have both seen incredible demand for tickets.
“On top of this, a record number of cruise ship visits, another round of River Revival Vouchers, exciting new product including the reopening of Southern Ocean Lodge in Kangaroo Island, and our domestic campaign continuing to entice Australians to ‘Travel Our Way’ – we are pulling all levers to help entice visitors to book a trip to South Australia in 2024.
“There is a certain momentum and real pride amongst all South Australians which we have never seen before as we continue to grow tourism in our state making South Australia a world-class destination that everyone needs to visit and experience.”
