Tourism Australia has announced today that South Australia has secured a place in the top ten rankings of the Best Australian Beaches for 2025. This annual recognition shines a spotlight on the country’s most stunning beach destinations.

The accolade of Australia’s best beach has been awarded to a 10-kilometre stretch of coastline in Tasmania’s Bay of Fires Conservation Reserve. Marking a departure from tradition, this is the first time the award has gone to a cluster of beaches rather than a single location. The prized coastline extends from The Gardens in the north to Binalong Bay in the south.

Beach expert Brad Farmer AM, a recognized authority on Australian coastal areas and a member of Tourism Australia’s Friends of Australia, conducted the evaluations. Farmer mentioned that despite the cooler water temperatures in Tasmania, the pristine nature of its beaches makes them deserving of the top spot. “I spent plenty of time in Tasmania assessing the beaches and in the end, there were so many incredible options I couldn’t even settle on one,” he explained.

Farmer’s assessment also placed Woolgoolga in New South Wales and Emily Bay Lagoon on Norfolk Island in the second and third positions, respectively.

South Australia’s own Fishery Bay, located on the scenic Eyre Peninsula, has also made it to this prestigious list. According to Brad Farmer, selecting from roughly 12,000 potential candidates nationwide is challenging and often sparks lively debate, indicating the passion Australians hold for their coastal environments.

Trade and Tourism Minister Don Farrell commended the inclusion of regional beaches in this year’s list. “This year’s list showcases to the world what Aussies already know – that Bondi and Brighton are great, but it’s worth the journey to see some truly unique beaches in regional Australia,” Minister Farrell stated.

Farrell also shared his excitment for South Australia’s recognition: “I was thrilled to see Fishery Bay on the Eyre Peninsula in SA make the top 10 – my great grandfather was the first harbour master at nearby Arno Bay, which is also a stunning spot.”

Tourism Australia Managing Director Phillipa Harrison praised Farmer’s efforts and noted the importance of beaches in attracting international tourists. “Visiting beaches around Australia to choose a top 10 is a tough job but someone has to do it and we thank Brad for his work once again this year,” said Harrison.

The inclusion of diverse beach destinations in the list — from the cooler, rugged coastlines of Tasmania to the warm, inviting waters of South Australia — highlights the country’s vast and varied offerings. These recognitions not only boost local tourism but also serve to remind Australians of the natural beauty surrounding them, encouraging exploration and appreciation of their national landscapes.
