To enhance and embrace renewable energy initiatives and broadening economic opportunities within infrastructure sectors, South Australia has entered into a partnership with Hyundai Engineering and Construction (Hyundai E&C). Hyundai E&C will focus on several critical areas including renewable energy resources like hydrogen, as well as housing and other infrastructure development.
This signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) took place at the headquarters of Hyundai E&C in Seoul, witnessed by South Australia’s Trade and Investment Minister, Joe Szakacs, during his inaugural trade mission to Korea and Japan.
The collaboration underscores South Australia’s continuing commitment to transition to net-zero emissions, highlighting its leading stance globally.
Currently, over 70% of South Australia’s energy generation derives from renewable sources with the state aiming for 100% net renewables by 2027 and a minimal 50% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
Minister Szakacs commented on the partnership’s immense potential.
“This MoU further enhances South Australia’s global standing as a leading jurisdiction in the transition to net-zero,” said Szakacs.
He also emphasised that this agreement demonstrates the state’s serious commitment towards decarbonisation which is acknowledged by globally significant industrial contributors such as Hyundai E&C.
In turn, Hyundai E&C has expressed its aspirations for the mutual benefits of this cooperation. An official from Hyundai E&C’s NewEnergy Division highlighted the synergistic potential of the partnership.
“Our mutual cooperation with the State of South Australia, a world leader in renewable energy, will serve as a catalyst for innovation in Australia’s energy infrastructure,” they noted.
They also expressed optimism that this collaboration will serve to rejuvenate South Australia’s economy and bolster strong global public-private partnerships.
Hyundai Engineering and Construction, established in 1947, is recognised as one of the foremost global entities in the construction and engineering sector, boasting a workforce exceeding 14,000 across 34 nations.
Known for their extensive portfolio, which includes over 880 projects in 62 countries, Hyundai E&C has contributed to major projects such as the Bosphorus Bridge in Turkey and Panama Metro Line 3. Hyundai E&C not only leads in civil engineering projects but also significantly influences Korea’s residential construction landscape.
Additionally, under the terms of the MoU, through its association with Invest SA, Hyundai E&C will seek deeper engagements with various governmental agencies within South Australia. This will potentially include exploring further infrastructure projects particularly in the housing sector, wherein Hyundai E&C holds significant global influence.
This MoU paves the way for future investment and job creation opportunities within the state while encouraging local businesses and industries to transition towards greener practices.
The strengthened relationship between South Australia and a key regional economy such as South Korea, fostered through Hyundai E&C, is expected to yield numerous benefits and enhanced prosperity for the region.
