South Australia is set to welcome its fourth 24-hour pharmacy this August, bringing round-the-clock access to medicines and healthcare every day of the year.

Located at the TerryWhite Chemmart in Hallett Cove Pavilion Shopping Centre, this new service comes alongside commitments made during the recent Black by-election and the State Government’s focus on improving healthcare services. In line with these efforts, the upcoming 2025-26 State Budget will include an allocation of $2.2 million to help pharmacists treat a wider array of medical conditions. Starting next year, qualifying pharmacists, after undergoing additional post-graduate education, can manage and treat conditions such as skin issues, ear infections, and musculoskeletal pain, among others.

Premier Peter Malinauskas shared, “We know that people get sick and require medicine at any time of day or night. That’s why we’re opening yet another 24/7 pharmacy – this time for the outer southern suburbs, just as we committed.”

The project is aiming to reduce some of the pressures on the state’s hospitals by offering an alternative avenue for healthcare during non-traditional hours. In the past year, the existing 24/7 pharmacies in Salisbury Plain, Clovelly Park, and Norwood have collectively served over 270,000 visitors in after-hours alone.

Treasurer, Stephen Mullighan, shared, “More than 270,000 South Australians have already been helped by our three 24/7 pharmacies and now we’re opening another one in Hallett Cove. We’re also committing funding in this year’s State Budget to expand pharmacists’ scope of practice, providing even more convenient healthcare for South Australians.”

Health and Wellbeing Minister Chris Picton said, “We are unashamedly backing community pharmacists to undertake a greater role in our health system. With additional training we are confident that skilled pharmacists can safely provide a broader range of services for the community, particularly in light of shortages of other primary care services.”

Robert Pietrantuono, the Pharmacist Proprietor at TerryWhite Chemmart Hallett Cove also shared, “TerryWhite Chemmart Hallett Cove is proud to announce its successful tender award from SA Health to provide 24-hour pharmacy services to Adelaide’s outer southern suburbs. This service will significantly benefit our local communities of Hallett Cove, Sheidow Park, Trott Park, and surrounding suburbs by ensuring continuous access to professional healthcare and essential medications.”

This expansion of 24-hour pharmacies and better pharmacological capabilities is a significant step towards more accessible and comprehensive healthcare in South Australia. These services are set to improve healthcare outcomes significantly and reduce the workload on emergency healthcare facilities.
