The State Emergency Management Committee is conducting a review into South Australia’s response to
the COVID-19 pandemic, in line with requirements under the State Emergency Management Plan.
Implementing its mandatory protocols following any extraordinary event, the State Emergency
Management Committee (SEMC) is now responsible for holding an internal review across government
agencies to review government processes and decision-making.
“As the Chief Public Health Officer during the truly unique time of the COVID-19 pandemic, my team and
I worked hand-in-hand with other departments and state leaders to make informed decisions as
situations rapidly evolved,” Chief Public Health Officer Professor Nicola Spurrier says.
“I am very proud of the way South Australians responded to the pandemic through supporting each other
and working to protect those more vulnerable across our diverse communities.
“There are many things we learnt through this work and it is important we take these learnings into the
future to keep all South Australians healthy and safe.”
As part of the whole of government review, SA Health have engaged the independent expert BRM
Advisory to conduct the Control Agency component. The advisory will speak directly to key health staff to understand the role SA Health had in the COVID-19 response.
The BRM review will assist SA Health to reflect on best practice, enabling us to be better prepared for
future emergencies.
This strategic review will consider the response during the Emergency Management Declaration from
March 2020 to May 2022 as occurs after all emergencies, major incidents, or disasters.
The review is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with the review’s recommendations and
findings to be made publicly available.
